BANGKOK – A quiet weekend afternoon in Bangkok turned into a nightmare when a heavy freight train plowed into a packed public transit bus at a busy downtown railway crossing. The violent crash, which occurred near the Airport Rail Link’s Makkasan Station, has left at least eight people dead and more than 30 others injured, including several in critical condition.
The collision sent shockwaves through the Ratchathewi district, sending a plume of black smoke into the city skyline as the bus and surrounding vehicles burst into flames. Emergency responders rushed to the chaotic scene, battling the blaze and pulling victims from the wreckage.
The fatal crash happened at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Asok-Din Daeng Road, right between the Rama IX and Asok-Phetchaburi intersections. A public bus operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) stopped at the crossing.
