MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department (MPD) on Tuesday released body camera footage showing the moment a suspect shot a police officer during a traffic stop in February. The shooting happened on the night of Feb. 26. Police had reported that Ofc. Oscar Torres-Molina pulled over a white car near Aloha Avenue and South Perkins in the Parkway Village neighborhood. The newly released footage shows the interaction between the officer and the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Danell Maxwell. In the video, Maxwell tells the officer that he has a gun. As both of them walked to the officer's squad car, the officer asked Maxwell if the VIN number on one of his car doors "always been scratched off like that." Moments later, the video shows Maxwell pulling out a gun and shooting Torres-Molina. The footage continues, showing Maxwell looking at the officer on the ground. MPD had previously reported that Torres-Molina was shot in the face. He was hospitalized for several days and released. Last week, police said the officer was still recovering. Maxwell was arrested Thursday at an apartment complex in Cordova. He was taken into custody with Tokeytha Owens, accused of hiding Maxwell inside her apartment.

And the moral of the story is... Cops, just do your traffic stop and quit trying to do all the extra shit to violate people's rights and stuff like this won't happen.

At this point they should immediately ordered to exit, be cuffed and lie face down on the ground for expired tags or a burned out bulb.

Retired Law Enforcement here. I DID NOT SEE ANYTHING, NOT ONE THING THE OFFICER DID WAS RIGHT. Not one. Complete lack of Training. Very stupid officer and Terrible Superiors who did not train the officer properly.

@ScreaminMime Holy Crap that cop was on his phone, staring at it while conducting and investigation. That's like crossing a Freeway while staring at your phone WTF. I know he took a picture of the VIN number. Don't use the phone at all while engaging. Total Lunacy.

@00BuckShot00 Always keep your gun hand free and do a pat down.

@00BuckShot00 That locating the VIN etc with both hands occupied should be done after a back-up unit arrives in my opinion.
