ELK GROVE, Calif. - A hot air balloon slammed into the side of a California casino after making an unplanned launch due to strong winds, police say.
Video captured the moment Monday afternoon when a hot air balloon slammed into the Sky River Casino in Elk Grove during a celebration for the groundbreaking of a new hotel. The balloon hit the side of the building, at one point reaching a 90-degree angle, while the pilot was still in the basket.
After the chaotic tumble, the balloon stayed in the air for about 20 minutes before landing in a field. The pilot was not injured, and there were no passengers on board.
The Elk Grove Police Department said the balloon made an unplanned launch due to unexpected strong winds and that it also hit a power line.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified about the incident.
