In Debel, a Maronite Catholic village in southern Lebanon, two IDF soldiers used a sledgehammer on a Jesus statue near a family home around April 19; six others nearby did not stop or report it. The military confirmed the incident, sentenced the two to 30 days in detention within days, removed them from combat, and replaced the statue with a golden one in coordination with locals. Prime Minister Netanyahu called it stunning and saddening, while U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee demanded severe consequences; Italian UNIFIL peacekeepers also installed a replacement within 48 hours.
