Bullfighter Morante de la Puebla suffers a 10 cm goring with rectal perforation

The afternoon of the opening of the Seville April Fair on Monday was marred by the serious goring suffered by Morante de la Puebla in the fourth bullfight of the corrida held at the Real Maestranza. The matador was caught while trying to fix the animal with his cape, and was knocked down after losing his footing in front of the bull.

After receiving initial treatment in the ring, the bullfighter was taken to the bullring's infirmary, where he underwent emergency surgery by the medical team led by Dr. Octavio Mulet. Initially, it was reported that he had suffered a goring with a guarded prognosis, but the medical report later confirmed the severity of his injuries.

According to the medical report, Morante suffered a “ bull horn wound to the posterior anal margin with a trajectory of approximately 10 cm, partially damaging the anal sphincter muscles and with a 1.5 cm perforation in the posterior wall of the rectum .” The report adds that “ the wound was washed and the rectal wall and sphincter apparatus were repaired, with suction drainage in the postanal and retrorectal spaces .”

The report concludes with an extremely serious prognosis, stating " Very Serious ." Following initial treatment in the infirmary, his transfer to a hospital is expected, while fans remain anxiously awaiting news of the bullfighter's progress, on a day that began with great anticipation but has ended in concern at the Seville bullring.
