National Guard tackled content creator Chrishaun Akins, known as South Memphis HypeMan, on Beale Street in Memphis over the weekend.
HypeMan was swinging his belt near a group of women. He says he thinks the Guard thought he was part of a nearby fight.
He claims he may have injured his shoulder and forearm and is planning to get an X-ray:
“I’m in pain, I’m feeling bad... I’m sad, my emotions are built up bad. They didn’t understand that at all; they just looked at me like I was nobody.”
Or maybe they thought he was attacking the women?
The National Guard was reportedly on Beale Street, patrolling the entertainment districts, as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force, launched in late 2025 with the goal of driving down violent crime in busy public areas.
Officials report a significant decline in crime in Memphis, citing a 25-year low and a 43% to 44% drop in overall crime during the fourth quarter of 2025, largely attributed to the Memphis Safe Task Force.
Just the presence of uniformed law enforcement and/or troops can help reduce violent crime. That’s certainly been proven true in Memphis.
