The British sometimes call these pretend Irish 'plastic paddies'. Many are also not Irish. Their ancestors considered themself Scottish or at least Scots Irish (Ulster Scots).

Protestant Scots were transplanted to Ulster during the 17th century by the British (Scottish) king James I to keep the Catholic Irish down but who then later immigrated to the USA.

So if you are an Irish American and Protestant (20-30% of Irish Americans are), I have some bad news for you. You are really Scottish. ;(
