Pilot survives helicopter crash in Table Mountain Park

A "Huey" Fire Bell UH-1 Iroquois crashed in Hout Bay, South Africa while battling a mountainside blaze earlier today.
The video shows the rotors clipping rocks before impact.

Thankfully, the pilot survived with only minor injuries.

I'm not a helicopter pilot, but it seems to me that climbing vertically and then moving forward puts slightly less strain on the engine than doing this.

If you have runs to do all day back and forth putting out fires, you'd be taking the longest path there every time and taking more time than the other guy climbing the slope.
