San Antonio, Texas — An off-duty San Antonio police sergeant is under investigation after cellphone video captured him fighting with a coach and parents following his ejection from a Catholic Youth Organization girls basketball game Sunday night. According to KSAT Investigates, Sgt. Daniel Contreras, a 31-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department, was seen on video placing an opposing coach in a headlock and later exchanging punches with parents. The altercation occurred just before 7 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church’s gymnasium in the 10700 block of Wurzbach Road. Sources told KSAT the game was between St. Matthew and St. Peter the Apostle of Boerne and involved girls under the age of 10. Video shows Contreras and the other coach were assessed technical fouls during the game. After being ejected for making contact with the coach, the confrontation escalated outside the gym. Footage captures Contreras placing the coach in a headlock and later being pushed to the ground by intervening parents as children can be heard crying in the background. The video then shows punches being exchanged between Contreras and another adult. Additional video shows the off-duty sergeant confronting a woman before being escorted away from the scene by another man. SAPD said that officers responded to the location but did not make any arrests because there was no complainant on scene willing to file a report. A department spokesperson said officials were unaware an off-duty sergeant was involved until contacted by reporters. The San Antonio Police Department has opened an internal investigation. The Catholic Youth Organization of the Archdiocese of San Antonio also confirmed it has launched a separate review.
