At least he sought the opinions and reccomendation of the team as a whole before deciding to award him.

Though I have never aggreed with awarding the M.o.F. to any sports figure for doing what they are paid to do. ( even if Olympians are not directly paid)
JFK started this in 1963 (I remember it and my parents stating their opinions about it).

I think it trivializes the award as that medal should be awarded to those civilians who do a major contribution to promoting the freedoms we have because of us being a republic nation.
