Eustaquio Martín, a veteran carnival participant, suffered a fatal goring in the Alguacilillo's bullring barrier when he tried to escape the bull in the first bullfighting event of the festivities.

The town of Ciudad Rodrigo is in mourning after the first death of the 2026 Carnival of the Bull was recorded. Eustaquio Martín , a 71-year-old resident and member of the 'Amigos del Tema' club , died in the early hours of Saturday during the nighttime bullfighting event of the first bullfighting festival .

The tragic incident occurred around 1:00 a.m., when a bull from the Antonio López Gibaja ranch in Extremadura gored the veteran carnival reveler in the upper part of the bullring, in the area known as the Alguacilillo's (small bailiff's) shelter . According to Dr. Enrique Crespo , head of the medical team present, speaking to LA GACETA, the goring was devastating: "He entered the infirmary in agony and died less than a minute later." "The wound, in the center of his chest, left his heart partially destroyed and half a lung damaged. The bleeding was uncontrollable and catastrophic."
