Woman Dragged from Car, Punches and Kicks Troopers During Traffic Stop: “PTSD” Claimed Tennessee Highway Patrol spotted a silver Honda Accord traveling 63 mph in a 45 mph zone in Memphis. Driver Heaven Byrd, 24, was ordered to step out but refused, rolled up her window, and remained inside despite repeated commands. Byrd briefly rolled her window down, at which point troopers pulled her from the car to make the arrest. She then assaulted them with punches and kicks before being taken into custody. She was booked for speeding, no driver’s license, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting official detention, violation of financial responsibility law (likely no insurance), and driving while license suspended/revoked/cancelled. Byrd and her mother, Alitta Barnes, claim the stop was unlawful. On Friday, February 6, 2026, around 5:35 PM, my 24-year-old daughter was pulled over by Tennessee state troopers in Memphis, Tennessee. From the beginning, the officers failed to follow basic legal procedure. They did not identify themselves, did not explain why she was being stopped, and never asked for her license, registration, or insurance, which is required during a lawful traffic stop. Instead of conducting a routine stop, one trooper immediately approached her vehicle with his flashlight and taser in hand, and threatened to break her window and tase her if she did not get out of the car. Heaven was terrified, and posed no threat. She is a 110-pound young woman with no criminal history, valid license, registration, and tags, and she was only seven minutes from home after leaving work. Two male troopers then forcibly removed my daughter from her vehicle and threw her to the ground. I was on FaceTime with Heaven during the entire encounter and arrived at the scene as officers were using force against her. I had to stand there and watch my child screaming for me while I was powerless to help. When I tried to speak up, I was threatened with a taser myself, ordered back into my vehicle, and told I would be arrested and tased if I did not comply, despite posing no threat. At no point did either of us present any danger. Tennessee law and standard law enforcement policy require clear communication, lawful justification, and proportional force during traffic stops. None of those standards were followed that day. We are raising funds to cover Heaven’s legal fees so we can hold those responsible accountable and make sure this does not happen to another family. This is about justice, transparency, and protecting our sons and daughters. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) shared on Monday a video of a truck crashing into one of its cruisers during a traffic stop on an interstate in Nashville. The footage reminded drivers about the Move Over Law. THP said the crash happened last week on Interstate 40 in Nashville — as the highways remained hazardous due to snow on the ground. The agency said the trooper stopped a speeding driver. At one point, the trooper asked, "97 in a 70? What's the reason for that?" Seconds later, a white truck smashed the trooper's cruiser from behind — "nearly pinning him between the guardrail and the stopped car," THP said. Fortunately, THP said, the trooper was able to walk away. "When you see emergency lights, SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER," THP said in a statement. "It's not just the law. As you see here, it could be a matter of life and death for the men and women who put themselves in harm's way to keep Tennessee roads safe." The Move Over Law requires drivers to move over to the next lane when you see emergency vehicles or slow down significantly if you can't move over in time.
