When responding to a question from the Global Times regarding the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) posting two Chinese-language videos on social media on Thursday for " recruiting Chinese officials to steal secrets," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday that the US not only maliciously smears and attacks China, but also blatantly attempts to lure Chinese personnel, even government officials, to be their informants.

This is a serious infringement on China's national interest and pure political provocation, the spokesperson said.

«## Country of Interest
China

## Factors Influencing Weapon Count
* **Military Spending:** China's military spending has been steadily increasing, with the country now ranking second in the world in terms of defense expenditure. In recent years, China has spent over $250 billion annually on its military, enabling significant investments in weapon acquisition, research and development, and modernization of its armed forces. This substantial budget drives the expansion and enhancement of China's weapon inventory.
* **Domestic Arms Production:** China has a well-developed domestic arms industry, with state-owned enterprises and private companies producing a wide range of weapons. Major defense contractors include China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), China South Industries Group Corporation (CSGC), and Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). These companies manufacture everything from small arms to advanced aircraft, naval vessels, and missile systems, ensuring a steady supply of domestically produced weapons.
* **International Arms Trade:** China is both an importer and exporter of arms, although its exports have been growing in recent years. China imports certain advanced technologies and components, particularly from Russia, to supplement its domestic capabilities. However, China's arms exports have been increasing, with recipients including countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. China's arms exports contribute to its global influence and help to offset some of the costs of its military modernization.
* **Black Market Activity:** While China has strict controls on the legal arms trade, there is potential for illegal arms flow, particularly in the context of small arms and light weapons. However, the impact of black market activity on the overall weapon count is relatively minor compared to the legal and regulated arms trade. China has taken steps to combat illegal arms trafficking, including strengthening border controls and enhancing law enforcement capabilities.

## Estimated Weapon Categories and Quantities
* **Small Arms (Pistols, Rifles, etc.):** Estimated at tens of millions of small arms in military and law enforcement inventories. This includes a wide range of handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Civilian possession of firearms is heavily restricted in China, so the majority of small arms are held by the military and law enforcement agencies.
* **Light Weapons (Machine Guns, Grenade Launchers, etc.):** Estimated at hundreds of thousands of units, including machine guns, grenade launchers, and other light weapons used by military and law enforcement agencies.
* **Heavy Weapons (Artillery, Tanks, etc.):** Estimated at tens of thousands of units, including artillery pieces, tanks, and armored vehicles. China has a significant inventory of heavy weapons, both in active service and in reserve. Notable examples include the Type 99 main battle tank and the PLZ-05 self-propelled howitzer.
* **Missiles and Rockets:** Estimated at thousands of units, including a variety of missiles and rockets for both offensive and defensive purposes. This includes ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and surface-to-air missiles. China's missile arsenal is a critical component of its strategic deterrent and conventional military capabilities.
* **Naval Vessels:** Estimated at over 300 active naval vessels, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines, and other support ships. The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has been rapidly modernizing and expanding its fleet, with a focus on blue-water capabilities.
* **Aircraft:** Estimated at over 3,000 aircraft, including fighter jets, bombers, helicopters, and transport planes. The People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and the PLAN have a growing inventory of advanced aircraft, such as the J-20 stealth fighter and the Y-20 transport plane.

## Total Estimated Weapon Count
Given the extensive and diverse inventory, the total estimated number of weapons in China is in the range of tens of millions, considering both military and law enforcement holdings. This includes a wide range of weapon categories, from small arms to advanced military systems.

## Limitations and Data Sources
* **Limitations:** The estimate is subject to several limitations, including data gaps in military inventories, classified information, and the dynamic nature of arms trade and production. Additionally, the black market activity is difficult to quantify accurately. China's military is also known for its secrecy, which can make it challenging to obtain precise data on its weapon inventories.
* **Data Sources:** The estimation is based on a variety of sources, including the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Chinese government reports, news articles, and industry analyses. Additionally, open-source intelligence and satellite imagery have been used to supplement the available data.
