On Friday, April 5, 2024, a routine traffic stop in Palatka, Florida, escalated into a major incident involving explosives and drug trafficking. Charles Legault, 60, was pulled over by a Putnam County deputy because the license plate on his pickup truck was not assigned to the vehicle. During the search of the vehicle, a homemade chemical pipe bomb exploded, releasing a chlorine-based substance that caused the deputy to suffer a respiratory injury. The deputy was hospitalized but later released. Following the explosion, the St. Johns County bomb squad was called to ensure no additional explosives were present in the truck. They discovered a pressure valve with the words "safe" and "armed" handwritten on it, which suggested intentional harm. The investigation led Putnam County deputies and ATF agents to raid Legault's property near Crescent City, about 25 miles from the traffic stop location. Legault lived in a camper on this property. During the raid, investigators recovered an undisclosed amount of illegal drugs believed to be methamphetamines, along with other evidence. They also found Patrick McGregor, 64, a previously convicted felon, living on the property. McGregor was found with trafficking amounts of methamphetamine, firearms, and ammunition. As a result, Charles Legault faces multiple charges, including: Possessing a bomb Aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer Illegal possession of an unregistered gun silencer Possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell Possession of a suppressor during the commission of a felony Maintaining a drug vehicle Armed trafficking of methamphetamine with a firearm Trafficking of methamphetamine with a suppressor Patrick McGregor is charged with: 15 counts of being a felon in possession of weapons 3 counts of drug trafficking Both Legault and McGregor are being held without bond. Legault has not cooperated with investigators, contributing to his detention without bond. The case has raised significant concerns about public safety, particularly due to the involvement of homemade explosive devices and the large quantity of methamphetamines found.
