A mugger who was caught on camera dragging an 80-year-old grandfather along the street with his getaway van before leaving him for dead at the roadside has been jailed for two years.

Footage shows Anthony Davies, 38, running down Higher Market Street in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on March 18, 2019, and jumping into his van after stealing 60-year-old Maria Stewart's handbag.

Mrs Stewart's husband, Frank, then runs down the street after Davies and opens the van's passenger door to try and get his wife's handbag back.

Mr Stewart then seems to start arguing with Davies as Mrs Stewart walks up to the van.

Davies then slams down the accelerator sending the van shooting off, while Mr Stewart is desperately clinging on to the open door.

Mrs Stewart is knocked to the ground and is unable to get up for a few moments while her husband is being dragged down the street.

He is thrown on to the road a short distance further, hitting his head.

Mrs Stewart suffered a fractured elbow while Mr Stewart lost consciousness for a short time, suffering cuts to his head and hand.

A scab from the wound on Mr Stewart's head was also found to be cancerous, and he now has to use a walking stick and electric scooter, Bolton Crown Court heard.

Davies has been sentenced to two years in prison after he admitted dangerous driving, theft and two counts causing actual bodily harm.

In a victim statement readout in court Mr Stewart said: 'I still struggle with sleep at night, I often see Maria, my wife, helpless on the floor.

'This makes me feel sad to be like that and I feel like something has been taken away from my life.'

He told how he he was too scared to go out on his own following the mugging, which took place just after 1am on March 18, 2019.

Mrs Stewart told the court in a statement: 'I can't explain the panic I felt seeing Frank just lying there unconscious and not moving.

'I thought he was dead. I remember screaming out as I sat on the pavement. That image of Frank will stay with me for the rest of my life.'

Davies removed his high visibility jacket and returned to the scene where police were still with his elderly victims to try and cover his tracks.

He even handed back the handbag he had stolen and claiming he'd found it in the road after seeing it thrown out a passing van

A pouch of tobacco, her cigarette case and glasses were still missing, the court heard.

Three days after the mugging, he then told his boss that a passenger he had given a lift to had jumped from the van but he did not see what happened.

A text to his boss read: 'None of this was my fault - it was a passenger I gave a lift to.'

Davies also told the police that he had loaned the van to someone in the pub, claiming that the accusation was a case of mistaken identity.

Andrew Mackintosh, prosecuting, told the court how the couple were walking along the street when Davies' van pulled up beside them.

At first Davies ran down a side street to urinate in a doorway.

Mr MacKintosh said: 'The man then turned and said, ''sorry I didn't see you there'' and Mr Stewart replied saying not to worry and he had been there.'

The couple continued walking until a few seconds later, when Mrs Stewart felt her handbag being ripped from her shoulder and saw the man running to his van with it.

Four days after the attack, Davies was arrested. The van, which belonged to a man Davies worked for as a delivery driver, was traced.

Police officers found clothing he had been wearing the night of the theft, as well as a holdall containing £20,000.

He admitted drug dealing and was jailed for 32 months, but had previously denied injuring the elderly couple.
