A Georgia high school coach reacted to his suspension as a result of an altercation during which he physically assaulted a female student who had brought a loaded firearm to school, an incident that raised questions on whether he acted with excessive force. Kenneth Miller who coaches at Tri-Cities High School in Fulton County said that “I don’t feel like I did anything wrong,” regarding the confrontation that took place last August. “I only adhered to what Fulton County School Board Policy says you’re allowed to do,” he added, according to Atlanta’s 11 Alive News. Miller insists that he was only defending himself when on August 20, 2021, he engaged with the student after being told by the principal that there were reports of students with guns on campus. The incident occurred when the coach, who was accompanied by police, confronted the student who he was unaware had a firearm at the time. When the student became aggressive, striking him with a stapler, Miller violently reacted to restrain her until the police could take control; a gun was allegedly found in the student’s book bag. Miller was initially fired but the school district later reversed the decision, suspending him instead.
