NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After a video went viral that showed an officer drawing his weapon at a vehicle, Newport News police spoke to the press to provide more context. The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, May 23, at a City Center parking garage, where officers responded to a gathering of about 30 to 40 cars, according to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew. “The video does show an officer pointing a gun at a dark-colored vehicle,” Drew said. However, Drew and other officials say security footage and officer accounts provide additional context not visible in the viral clip. According to police, a vehicle pulled out and passed closely behind an officer whose back was turned, leaving little time to react. Drew said the officer had about two-tenths of a second to respond and believed he was in danger. “The officer said, ‘I felt like I was about to be hit or run over. I turned, I addressed it, and I ordered that vehicle to stop,’” Drew said. Officials said the tense moment escalated quickly but was resolved just as fast. Drew described an exchange between the officer and the driver that was not captured in the viral video. “He says to the officer, ‘I just want to go home,’ and the officer in the same conversation says to him, ‘I have kids too, and I just want to go home,’” Drew said. Drew added that the interaction reflects the circumstances on both sides of the encounter. “I think these are good kids in our city,” he said. Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Jones said she reviewed the video and believes fear influenced both the officer and the driver. “And I have no doubt from watching the video that the officer was very scared in that moment as well,” Jones said. “Above all else, we focus on our kids.” No injuries were reported. Drew said he has since been in contact with community members, including parents who reached out with concerns about what happened. He said he has spoken with them directly and explained the situation. RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Police said a 31-year-old woman was fatally shot by an officer on May 7, 2026, after officers responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex on Midlothian Turnpike. According to Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, officers were dispatched at approximately 6:47 p.m. after a man called 911 reporting he heard a gunshot inside an apartment where Jazmin Wooten-Mitchell was located. During the call, people could reportedly be heard attempting to get her to open the door while the caller told dispatchers they believed she had been shot and they could not get inside. Police said a second 911 call was received while officers were en route, reporting that a woman was outside the apartment building firing a gun. When officers arrived, witnesses directed them toward an upstairs area of the complex as residents were seen running from the scene. Investigators said Wooten-Mitchell fired toward an apartment and in the direction of the stairwell as officers approached. One officer then discharged his weapon, striking her. Officers recovered a handgun near Wooten-Mitchell and attempted medical aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or residents were reported injured. Family members and local media identified Wooten-Mitchell as the mother of two children, including a 6-month-old son and a daughter who recently turned 11. Relatives told reporters she had recently experienced the death of one child’s father prior to the incident. Roanoke, VA - On May 10, at 1:35 p.m., an officer with RPD responded to the 2000 block of Carvin Street NE for a report of trespassing. When the officer arrived, he reportedly found a man, later identified as 34-year-old Ronnie Lee Reed, of Martinsville, getting out of a large U-Haul. According to the department, the officer began speaking with Reed and determined that he had active warrants. Officials said the incident occurred as the officer attempted to take Reed into custody. "The officer attempted to take Mr. Reed into custody by grabbing his wrist, and he then swung a fist at the officer," explained the department. "They both fall to the ground, and the officer lands on top of Mr. Reed. He produces a knife in his right hand and begins threatening to kill himself and stab the officer." RPD stated that the arresting officer told Reed to drop the knife multiple times and then struck him in the face. "The officer tells Mr. Reed multiple times to drop the knife and delivers closed fist strikes to his face," said RPD. "Once Mr. Reed drops the knife, the officer takes him into custody." According to the department, Reed was arrested on the outstanding warrants and additionally charged with assault and battery on law enforcement, attempt to intimidate or impede law enforcement and resisting arrest. FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Three people were arrested on outstanding warrants during a police patrol in Hybla Valley, Virginia, according to the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD). Officers said they were doing a bike patrol around 5:12 p.m. on March 14 in the 7900 block of Janna Lee Avenue when they spotted two people they recognized as wanted suspects. Police said Catherine Harris, 26, and Darias Smith, 30, both listed as having no fixed address, were stopped. Officers determined Smith also had an outstanding warrant from the Virginia State Police. While officers were making those arrests, they saw a third person, Idris Mussa, 33, of Alexandria, who was also wanted. After a brief foot chase, he was taken into custody. Harris faces a charge of possession of Schedule I/II drugs and was served warrants, including three misdemeanor failures to appear and one felony failure to appear. She was held on a $1,000 secured bond. Smith was served a felony warrant for sex offender registration violation and held without bond. Mussa faces possession of Schedule I/II drugs and obstruction of justice charges, along with warrants for five counts of petit larceny, two counts of violating conditions of release, and two counts of trespassing.
