Detroit Police Commissioner Darious Morris is making no apologies for what he did-or did not do-when he found himself in the midst of a violent brawl happening Tuesday in the city. He got what comes behind it. He got a hard lesson, and I was not about to stop it, Morris said of a man who was seen being repeatedly punched after a brawl erupted. The Detroit Police Department is aware of the video, according to a spokesperson, and is actively looking into what happened. You dont have to get the police involved all the time, Morris said. This is a situation where there was mutual combat. It started, Morris said, when two women began to fight. Morris and others were in the crowd watching. Morris was not seen throwing any punches but says at some point, he observed a man strike a woman. Someone decided to intervene, pushed him off of her, once he pushed him off of her, the man got up went to retaliate against him. Swung on him twice. He ducked the punch and was able to pick him up and put him on his back, he said. And with the person who Morris says was the aggressor on his back, another man is seen repeatedly punching him while hes on the ground. Morris is wearing the black t-shirt and a Detroit police hat with a gold badge on the front. As if you were almost egging him on, said 7s Ross Jones. I was just saying watch the face shots though. Watch the face shots though, replied Morris. Is that an appropriate thing for a police commissioner to say in a fight? asked Jones. Watch the face shots? Because if you hit ... in the wrong way or you hit him in the head or anything, something else could happen, said Morris. With the man still on the ground, he is then kicked in the face. Morris can be seen pushing the man back. Did you have a duty to intervene when he was being punched on the ground. asked Jones. I did intervene, hes had enough. I told him he had enough, in the midst, said Morris. Embattled Detroit Commissioner says hes staying put as arrest video emerges When asked how Morris decided the point when the man had enough, Morris responded, Because I am a mixed martial arts fighter, so Im observing body language. Morris never called Detroit police, he said, because he believed someone else in the crowd already had. While he says he believed he witnessed domestic violence, he did not stay for police to arrive to provide a statement. Im not going to put myself in harms way, Im not going to do the polices job. Im not going to give nobody a reason to think that Im picking a side in the fight, said Morris. It kind of seemed like you were though, as you were swinging in the air as hes getting punched in the face, said Jones. It started with two customers but turned into a brawl inside the Home Depot store on Detroit’s West Side this week. Some were see grabbing makeshift weapons from the store shelves. A Detroit police officer working security at a Home Depot near Meyers and Seven Mile was injured while trying to break up a fight. Police say the officer stepped in to stop an altercation between several men and called for backup. Detroit police say officers were investigating a man who they believed was violating curfew and carrying a concealed weapon. The man ran into a house and officers chased after him. Multiple officers ran into a group of people who were in the home, which eventually led to a scuffle, with police shoving and pushing into the home pursuing the suspect. During the chaos, a man in a blue shirt was placed in handcuffs while officers continued to enter the home. Police say he was arrested for obstructing police. He is not the individual that police were originally pursuing when they entered the house. Officials say they are conducting an internal investigation regarding the officer’s actions. A Detroit woman says a gun was pulled on her after getting her hair done. She says it all started over a dispute about the cost of the service, and part of the confrontation was caught on video. Robin Phillips went to the hairdresser’s house with her boyfriend and daughter. She says she was expecting to pay a discounted rate because the hairdresser was advertising a special. However, the hairdresser told her she would have to pay more. Robin says she did end up paying the higher price but then things escalated. "She had the scissors in her hands, she already had scissors in hand. She said, ‘If you don’t pay me, then I’m going to cut your daughter’s hair,’" said Phillips. "She kept waving the scissors around like this, and I was just trying to calm her down, ‘Please do not do that.’" She later said the woman ran upstairs and grabbed an AR. "I’m just like distraught right now because she did all of this for what, when we could have just simply just handled it, you know, like adults," Robin said. "She said," I will shoot you. She was saying that, yeah, she said, ‘I will bury you over $10.’ So we pushed past her. We had to get outta there." Robin says she later went to a Detroit police precinct and filed a report.
