AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage of the officer-involved shooting that took place on Glenn Hills Drive on March 13.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect in the incident, Brandon Hill, raised a gun in the air after being told to show his hands. Hill then pointed the gun at Deputy David Hopkins. Deputy Hopkins then shot Hill in the chest.
On Monday, after an independent review by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, authorities ruled that Deputy Hopkins’ use of force was justified, saying he acted within department policy.

«@ScreaminMime Man, politics aside, you’re really just an all-around ignorant dumbass, aren’t you? Police officers are bound by department policies as well as case law to immediately render aid once a scene has been deemed safe.
Suicidal intent does not remove the officer’s obligation to preserve life and certainly does not override the legal assumption that ***a person in acute medical distress cannot give informed consent to refuse treatment.*** Even DNRs are required to be placed in advance by a competent individual, not right there on the spot as the person is dying and delirious.
Had the officer ignored his sworn oath and let the guy die he would have faced punishment for violating strict protocols as well as give the family of the deceased a wide open path for a wrongful death lawsuit against the officer, department, and city. The officer did exactly what he was required to do, professionally, ethically, and legally.
