A man who shot 21-year-old gymnast Kara Welsh 8 times while she was in the fetal position said he did so because he feared for his life.
Chad Richards, 23, was arrested and charged with the murder of Welsh after she was found in an apartment.
Police say they found Richards crying in the hall while Welsh was inside the apartment.
Richards claims Welsh tried grabbing a gun from a nightstand during an "altercation," leading him to take it from her and fire at her.
At the scene, Richards told police he shot her "with the handgun because he feared for his life."
Police say ballistics evidence showed he fired multiple shots while she was in the fetal position.
In total, 11 shots were fired in the apartment. 8 of them hit Welsh.
"Kara was excited to be in her rising senior year as a gymnast at UW-Whitewater which was abruptly cut short on August 30th, by a heartless act of violence," the family's GoFundMe read.
