An American woman chained to a tree and left to die in an Indian jungle was rescued after a local shepherd heard her cries for help.
Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, was married to a man from Tamil Nadu, the same region in South India where Kamala Harris' mother is from.
Kumar was found chained to a tree in a forest near Sonurli village, about 280 miles from Mumbai.
She was rushed to a hospital and reported that her ex-husband had tied her to the tree.
It is unclear how long she was in the jungle, but she claimed to have gone 40 days without food.
Police have launched an attempted murder case against her ex-husband.
He also faces acts endangering life or personal safety of others and wrongful confinement charges.
