A video recently released by the Tucson Police Department shows a confrontation between a man who told officers he was practicing his sword skills outside his motel room in Tucson, moments before he attacked one of the officers. and be fatally shot.
Body camera footage shows Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Ramon Morales and another deputy arriving at the motel near South Palo Verde and East Irvington roads around 10 p.m. on February 24.
Both officers were responding to a worker's 911 call that hotel guests were complaining about a man yelling and using a sword in the parking lot.
Officers encountered Devon Lewis, 23, who was carrying a large, sheathed Japanese-style sword called a katana. Camera footage shows Lewis talking to the two officers as they try to assess the situation.
"I'm trying to achieve greatness with the katana. Is that illegal in the US?" Lewis can be heard asking the agents.
The conversation continues for a short time before Lewis unsheathed his sword and charged at one of the officers with the blade raised. It is at that precise moment that Officer Morales fires his weapon and Lewis falls to the ground, seen in the video.
The agents began to apply emergency medical aid to save Lewis' life after the shooting, but he died at the scene.
