This happened in Queens, New York, on July 15, 2021. Around 8 p.m., James McGonagle, then 24 years old, was captured on video attempting to kidnap a 5-year-old boy. The incident occurred on Hillside Avenue while the boy was walking with his family. McGonagle is seen grabbing the child and placing him in the back seat of a parked red vehicle. The boy's mother, Dolores Diaz Lopez, intervened promptly, pulling her son out of the car through an open window.
McGonagle was indicted for attempted kidnapping in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a child, facing up to 15 years in prison if convicted. He was apprehended on July 16, 2021, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn due to facial injuries.
