OTTAWA HILLS, OH - On August 26th, 2022 at 4:07AM, an Ottawa Hills Police Officer observed a vehicle driving towards Secor Road without taillights on at night. The officer positioned herself behind the driver, activated her emergency lights, and initiated a stop. As the officer approached the vehicle, she could detect an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle. The suspect was observed to have bloodshot, glassy eyes and was donning several event style wristbands. The suspect claimed that she was leaving a college party and was then asked to step out of her vehicle to perform field sobriety tests (FST). During the horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) test, the suspect was observed to have distinct and sustained nystagmus at 45 degrees and lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes. For the lack of convergence test, the suspect's pupils also did not change size with light. After being instructed how to perform the walk-and-turn test, the suspect began on the wrong foot, did not touch heel-to-toe several times, stepped on her toe once, stopped before the turn, and asked how to complete the turn before performing an improper turn. For the one-legged balance test, the suspect hesitated several times to remember on what number she was. During the modified Romberg test, the officer then observed rapid eye movement and the suspect waited 32 seconds when asked to estimate the passage of 30 seconds. Following the tests, the suspect consented to taking a preliminary breath test (PBT) which yielded a result of .127% BrAC. The suspect was then subsequently arrested for operating a vehicle under the inluence, or OVI.
