Columbia, South Carolina — The Richland County Sherriff’s Office released new footage and the 911 call of the fatal shooting of a man who lunged at officers with a wooden stake. 34-year-old Irvin Moorer Charley died in the incident that took place on Heyward Brockington Road in north Columbia. On Saturday, March 19, 2022 deputies responded to a 911 call about a man threatening relatives with a knife in a north Columbia home. On arrival they found Irvin D. Moorer-Charley holding a narrow piece of wood. Deputy John Anderson ordered him to drop the wooden stake and get on the ground.

Moorer Charley appears to say, “Y’all gonna have to shoot me” or “Y’all can shoot me” twice. The mother tries to appeal to her son stop what he’s doing. The other man shouts for Moorer Charley not to get himself hurt. Deputy Zachary Hentz arrives moments later and gives the same order before trying, but failing, to shoot Moorer Charley with a stun gun. The stun gun has no apparent affect, and then Moorer Charley runs at the deputy Hentz as he fires seven times until the man collapses. Deputies immediately rendered CPR on Moorer Charley for 20 minutes until EMS arrived on the scene. He was later pronounced deceased.
