Researchers at the University of Tokyo's Biohybrid Systems Laboratory cultured human skin cells in collagen gel and attached the living tissue to robot surfaces using tiny perforations and plasma treatment. This allows the skin to stretch realistically over 3D faces, self-heal small cuts through cell growth, and mimic human movements without bleeding. Professor Shoji Takeuchi's team, publishing in June 2024, aims for robots with added nerves and glands; applications include disaster-response bots and drug-testing models.
