Batavia, OH - A Clermont County corrections officer was arraigned Wednesday for allegedly assaulting an inmate. Matthew Mullenix pleaded not guilty to two counts of felonious assault. On July 7, Mullenix went into the cell of an inmate who had a shirt wrapped around his neck. Once inside the cell, the shirt was quickly removed. The inmate was taken to the hospital where it was discovered he had injuries unrelated to the inmate reportedly trying to hang himself. In court, an assistant prosecutor said the inmate suffered at least six rib fractures and needed 23 staples to close a head wound. Body cam video also shows the incident. The inmate is blurred out, but blood can be seen on him and the floor. Mullenix was placed on administrative leave. Georgetown, Ohio — While on routine patrol, Patrolman Rammel with the Georgetown Police Department observed a female subject walking. The individual was identified as Mary McElroy, who was known to have an active warrant. Aware of McElroy's history of violent behavior, Patrolman Rammel called for assistance. Upon approaching McElroy, Patrolman Rammel informed her of the warrant. She observed pre-attack indicators from the suspect and attempted to evade being struck in the face. Deputy Hardy arrived on the scene and promptly moved everyone away from the immediate roadway to safety. Together, Patrolman Rammel and Deputy Hardy attempted to control McElroy. After a struggle, they were able to place her in restraints. During the altercation, Patrolman Rammel sustained cuts, bruises, damaged uniform, and was spit on, necessitating medical treatment and evaluation. Two Columbiana County sheriff's deputies suffered broken bones after a 20-year-old defendant broke free from handcuffs following a sentencing hearing at the county courthouse in Lisbon. The suspect, Timothy Reaggle, allegedly punched one deputy in the throat, assaulted another and tried to flee before being stopped with a Taser near the courthouse doors. Westlake, OH - A driver who crashed after leading officers on a chase, refused to get out of the vehicle, and smoked drugs during the hour-long negotiations, said Westlake police. According to Westlake police, this started around 10:15 p.m. on Sept. 4 when Bay Village police tried to pull over the 51-year-old Parma man. The driver refused to stop and entered Westlake on Dover Center Road and then turned onto Center Ridge Road. After passing Bradley Road, Westlake Police Captain Gerald Vogel said a trained Westlake officer ended the chase with a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver and the suspect spun out. When officers approached the vehicle, Captain Vogel said the driver texted and talked on the phone while smoking cigarettes and suspected crack cocaine out of straight glass pipe. Officers then broke out the rear windows of the vehicle and dropped in pepper ball, but Captain Vogel said the driver “seemed unaffected by the irritant.” About an hour later, a Westlake Police Department K9 was put in the vehicle. The driver is accused of kicking at the dog, but the K9 was not hurt. Officers then broke the driver’s door glass and tried to pull the suspect out of the vehicle; however, Captain Vogel said the driver had to be tased, because he would not release the steering wheel. The suspect was then taken out of the car and transported to a local hospital to have the taser barbs removed. STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - A 60-year-old woman will be facing charges following a police pursuit Tuesday in a stolen vehicle in Strongsville. According to the Strongsville Police Department, officers located a reported stolen vehicle on Pearl Road in the area of Whitney Road at 11:15 a.m. Officers were advised the stolen vehicle was involved in a pursuit earlier Tuesday morning with the North Olmsted Police Department. The stolen vehicle had pulled into the Kings Inn, where a Strongsville officer then attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then struck a Strongsville police cruiser, police said, fleeing the scene northbound on Pearl Road. A Strongsville officer and a trooper from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) began to pursue, when the vehicle ran a red light and struck an uninvolved vehicle. The crash caused the stolen vehicle to strike a utility pole and roll over. Police said the sole occupant, a 60-year-old woman, had to be transported to Southwest General Hospital. The woman had non-life threatening injuries, and the occupant of the uninvolved vehicle had no injuries at the time of the incident, police shared. TOLEDO, Ohio- A former Ohio attorney was convicted of attempted murder after prosecutors said he tried to shoot his ex-wife inside a crowded Toledo restaurant before a waiter and patrons intervened. Lucas County jury found Matthew Exton, 43, guilty of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault and multiple firearm specifications. He was acquitted of a third felonious assault charge. The charges stemmed from an April 11, 2025, confrontation at Sabira restaurant in downtown Toledo. According to Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates, as reported by WTOL, Exton had been drinking at neighboring Souk when he saw his ex-wife and her family at Sabira, which was celebrating its opening night. Exton entered Sabira, ordered a drink to be sent to their table and spat toward the group as he left, according to prosecutors. He later returned armed with a handgun and headed toward his ex-wife's table. Prosecution witnesses testified Exton attempted to fire the gun at his ex-wife, but it did not discharge because the safety was engaged. A waiter tackled Exton before he could make another attempt. The gun contained one round in the chamber and seven more in the magazine, according to prosecutors. "Nothing in their training and soft openings at the restaurant could have prepared the staff for what walked through that door," Bates said, via WTOL. "The defendant did not come with the intention of having a meal. He came with anger in him and with the intention to commit a public execution of his ex-wife at the restaurant that day." Exton testified that he did not intend to pull the trigger, reports The Toledo Blade, and claimed he pointed the gun at his ex-wife in an effort to pressure her to speed up the sale of their former home. The newspaper also reported that the trial also took an unusual turn during closing arguments when Judge Gary Cook ordered Exton removed from the courtroom after he repeatedly interrupted prosecutors. Exton watched the verdict remotely from a holding area. A man in Columbus, Ohio, who appeared to be trying to lose the police ended up losing his pants after he ran the bicycle he was riding into a fence. Footage recorded by Mikelle Smith's home security camera in Columbus shows the man riding a bicycle straight into Smith's backyard fence. As the bike hits the fence, the man goes headlong over it and his pants get caught on the top. The man stands up, still with his pants down, and runs out of the frame of the camera as two police officers exit their patrol car, jump over the fence, and follow the man. One of the officers also falls on his way over the fence. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing," Smith said. TOLEDO, Ohio — A 26-year-old from Maumee was injured after being struck by a vehicle early Saturday in downtown Toledo, according to police. The crash happened around 12:44 a.m. in the 600 block of Monroe Street. Investigators said the person was crossing Monroe Street when they were struck by a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old. The pedestrian landed near 619 Monroe St. and was taken for medical treatment. Four passengers were inside the vehicle: a 20-year-old, a 15-year-old, a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old, according to the police report. The report does not indicate that the driver or passengers were injured. No arrests or charges were listed.
