A former employee at the Trader Joe’s on California and Hyde stole a bottle of wine before the store opened Friday morning. Staff yelled at him to leave as he fled with it. Officers who were already in the parking lot investigating a vehicle fire gave chase. The suspect resisted, leading to a struggle on the ground in the street. A Lexus SUV then struck all three — the suspect and two officers. The shoplifter was killed. One officer was pinned under the car and both suffered leg injuries but are expected to recover.
