When police arrived, Henry's attacker told officers that he had been the victim of a racist attack and claimed Henry Nowak had assaulted him and knocked off his turban which was a lie. Officers treated Henry's attacker as the victim and handcuffed Henry Nowak while he was seriously injured and treated him like a criminal. You can hear Henry asking for help. Henry: "Help me!" Henry: "I've been stabbed!" Henry: “I can’t breathe!” over and over again. Officer: "I don't think you have mate." Digwa fatally stabbed Nowak five times with a 21cm (8.3 inches) ceremonial Sikh blade (shastar/kirpan). The jury convicted Digwa of murder on 28 May 2026. Digwa's mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, was found guilty of assisting an offender. The judge rejected Digwa's accusations that Nowak had physically or racially abused him. Digwa received a sentence of life imprisonment, with a minimum of 21 years. Hampshire police and Isle of Wight Constabulary publicly apologized after the trial. Officers were initially misled by false claims from Vickrum Digwa that he had been the victim of a racist assault, and that officers did not immediately realize Henry Nowak had suffered fatal stab wounds. The police referred the incident to the independent watchdog, which is investigating the officers' actions, including the handcuffing and medical response. Sikh kirpan blade is legal to carry in UK, if it is genuinely carried for religious reasons under the exemptions in UK law. The law does not set a general maximum blade length for a kirpan carried for religious reasons.
