FRESNO, Calif. — A woman was arrested after police say she drove recklessly with children in her vehicle following a hit-and-run crash in Fresno. The Fresno Police Department says officers responded around 6:07 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, to a crash near Shields and Fowler Avenues, with the driver leaving the scene. Officers later located the suspect vehicle traveling west on Highway 180. Police helicopter AIR1 followed the vehicle from above and reported seeing it speeding, driving on the shoulder, tailgating and sideswiping another vehicle. The driver eventually crashed into a guardrail near the Blackstone and Abby Avenue exit. Police say a juvenile passenger got out and ran to an officer for help. That child had visible head injuries, while a second juvenile reported pain from the crash. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Brooke Smith, showed signs of impairment. Sophia Dismukes never made it to the party. Her sister called for a welfare check, and Secaucus police found her slumped over and asleep in her car. The car was off. Then she started it. She said the knocking scared her. Officers figured she was about to leave and had just passed out first. Her phone didn’t help: GPS was pulled up. She said she’d drunk earlier, gone back to the car, and fallen asleep. She performed miserably on the field sobriety tests, as expected. Dismukes was booked for DWI. TAMPA, Fla. - A woman who was arrested on DUI charges was caught on camera driving the wrong way in Hillsborough County. Dashcam video from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office shows a driver traveling the wrong way around 12:30 a.m. on Sheldon Road near West Linebaugh Avenue. The driver, Kami Ellis, 52, was seen jumping a curb before coming to a stop. When the deputy asks if the woman is feeling okay, she replies with," Yeah. I’m good." He told her she was driving the wrong way on the road and hopped a curb. The deputy asks if she can shut off the car and then says, "You don’t know how to shut your car off? Is this your car?" When he asks for her driver’s license, the woman is seen fumbling through a wallet, and the deputy tells her that she pulled out a credit card and a Barnes and Noble gift card. Once the woman is out of the vehicle, the deputy asks her to take one step forward. He then tells her to put her glasses on and her hands behind her back before placing her in handcuffs.
