The two individuals in the front seats were killed instantly. They were identified as Francisco Beltrán "N" ("El Payín") and Humberto Rangel "N," both believed to be originally from Sinaloa. Cause of Explosion: Preliminary investigations by authorities, including the Guardia Nacional, indicate that a grenade of fragmentation or similar explosive device detonated inside the vehicle, rather than being thrown at it. The attack occurred around 6:00 PM on March 28, shortly after the individuals left the AIFA terminal, where "El Payín" had reportedly just landed. Security camera footage showed the truck, a white pickup, zigzagging on the highway after the blast before colliding with a concrete divider. Investigation: The Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) is investigating the incident. Reports suggest "El Payín" was affiliated with the "La Mayiza" faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Streets of Culiacán, Mexico

One of the most powerful and feared criminal organisations in Mexico has unleashed a wave of violence across 20 Mexican states, following the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as "El Mencho", shortly after being captured amid a bloody firefight in Jalisco. Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) have turned many towns and cities where the cartel is active into war zones. BBC international correspondent Quentin Sommerville travelled to Culiacán in northern Sinaloa state, another Mexican cartel hotspot at war with itself after the removal of its cartel leader in 2024, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, who is now in prison in the US. The BBC followed two paramedics in Culiacán, Julio César Vega and Héctor Torres, who attend to victims following violent incidents. Héctor said the violence in Culiacán had never been so bad or gone on for so long.

Mexico... He heads a branch of the Fuerzas Especiales Mencho (FEM) called Operativa Yogurt (also known as Los Yogures or Yoghuriza). He currently has men operating in Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Colima, and the Sierra Madre Occidental in Michoacán. Yogurt was born on March 16, 1997, in Apatzingán, Michoacán. He began his career in the cartel world working for Los Viagras, who were then part of Cárteles Unidos (CU), an anti-CJNG alliance. During that period, Yogurt was known for his friendship with other CU leaders, such as Luis Barragán Chávez, alias “El R5,” leader of the Los Reyes group. By 2022, Yogurt had switched sides and begun working for the CJNG. Reports indicate that the CJNG recruited Yogurt not for his skills as a combat commander, but for his talent in developing and improving drug trafficking routes into the United States. He was allegedly assigned as the regional leader for U.S. drug trafficking in Colima and Jalisco. Yogurt reportedly prioritizes hiring former soldiers from the Colombian or Guatemalan armed forces, something he can afford thanks to the substantial revenue he generates for the CJNG through drug trafficking. This focus kept Yogurt and his men active outside Michoacán, but in late 2022 he briefly returned to the state amid a resurgence of violence. His men, previously allied with Los Reyes and Los Viagras, had to fight them. In December 2022, Yogurt released a video denouncing a local commander he accused of collaborating with the CJNG. In May 2025, the Mexican Navy attempted to capture El Yogurt in Huitzontla, Michoacán. His men fiercely counterattacked, resulting in 12 dead CJNG gunmen, 3 wounded marines, and 9 captured gunmen.
