A school bus with 14 children aboard was caught on home security camera crashing into a parked van in Odessa, Texas, on Thursday, September 17. Tiffany Miles's camera captured part of the collision on Monahan Street, She said that the bus first struck a trailer before hitting her husband's work van, which was pushed into another car. Police told local news the bus driver left the roadway and first struck the parked trailer before continuing into other vehicles. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was cited for failure to control speed. The Ector County Independent School District (ISD) said there were no serious injuries to the students, anyone else on the street, or the bus driver. New York Attorney General Letitia James’ Office of Special Investigations (OSI) launched a probe into a Jackson Heights fatal collision that killed a woman just steps from her home last month after it was determined that the driver of the vehicle was an off-duty NYPD officer. On Saturday, April 25, Alba Giraldo, 67, of 92nd Street in Jackson Heights, was walking home just after 8:45 p.m. and crossing 32nd Avenue in a marked crosswalk when a 27-year-old man driving a 2020 Jeep Gladiator traveling westbound on 32nd Avenue made a left-hand turn onto 92nd Street, where he struck the elderly woman. Police from the 115th Precinct a block from the scene responded and found Giraldo lying on the roadway with severe head trauma. She was rushed by EMS to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. The off-duty cop who was behind the wheel of the Jeep remained on the scene and was later transported by EMS to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in Flushing, where he was listed in stable condition. An NYPD spokesman could not say if the off-duty cop was assigned to the 115th Precinct. Giraldo succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on Thursday, April 28. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad OSI started its own investigation into the case of May 1, pursuant to New York State Law Section 70-b. OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission. Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed. Also, the decedent may or may not be in custody or incarcerated. A 74-year-old man tragically died in São Paulo, Brazil, after being crushed by a concrete structure that suddenly collapsed from the facade of a building. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 14, at around 10:00 a.m., in the Guaianases neighborhood, in the eastern part of the city. The tragic moment was recorded by a security camera. A teenage girl appeared to walk away unharmed after she was pushed beneath a Mack truck in Northeast Philadelphia, an incident captured on security video that witnesses described as a miracle. Security video from Ivonne Jewelry store on the corner of Summerland Avenue and Marcella Street shows the girl looking down at her cellphone as she walks in front of the truck. Moments later, the truck begins moving, pushing her underneath. Bladimir Gomera, who works at Ivonne Jewelry, said he and his cousin, store owner Ivonne Roson, were outside recording a separate video when they saw what was happening. "I was yelling, 'Stop, stop, stop,'" Gomera said. Video shows Gomera attempting to get the driver's attention as Roson also signaled for the truck to stop. Gomera said he ran to check on the girl and found that her hair was pinned beneath one of the truck's tires. "I talked to her — she told me that she was fine," Gomera said. Witnesses said they directed the driver to move the truck slightly forward so the girl could free herself. Roson said the girl remained calm after getting out from beneath the truck. "She was very quiet," Roson said. "We ask her, 'Are you OK?' She said, 'Yes.'" Witnesses said the girl, whom they estimated to be between 14 and 16 years old, then walked home. They say the phone remained in her hand throughout the incident. There is no traffic light or stop sign where witnesses said she crossed. Roson and Gomera said the driver appeared concerned and may not have seen the girl walk in front of the truck. Philadelphia police said officers were dispatched to the area Friday, but no one involved in the incident was there when they arrived. She said she tried to keep moving ahead so that the car could not block her motorcycle. At the same time, a friend riding behind her attempted to shield her and prevent the car from coming alongside her again. According to Sia, the car continued to pursue her before the driver allegedly tried to cut in front of her motorcycle. In the process, she said, the vehicle struck her bike and sped away.
