A wild crash that nearly injured an OPP officer resulted in charges for a 21-year-old Thunder Bay man this week.

On Wednesday, the OPP and a tow truck were on scene on Highway 17 near Old Woman Bay shortly after noon, attempting to clear another collision, when a vehicle failed to slow down and flew into the ditch, nearly hitting an OPP officer.

“Luckily, there were no injuries,” said Const. Ashley Nickle, the OPP's media relations officer.

The driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to slow down and proceed with caution for an emergency vehicle or tow truck.

«SUV not notice the flashing police lights. Looked like he tried to react too late to cause the slide. That and no snow tires. :wassat:»

«@Tuukka - On a slippery road, you should not touch the brakes or make a sudden movement. Those who do not know it, or are forced to do so, end up in the ditch.»

«@minoltista Yes. Snow tires won't let you slide like that at that speed. Summer tires become like hockey pucks.»

«@Tuukka - Winter tires don't work miracles. It's better than 4 season tires, but that's it. Southeastern Canada was surprised at the beginning of November by a pretty heavy snowstorm. Nobody expected that. I got caught in it myself with the summer tires and it wasn't fun at all.
I repeat it once again. The cop should not have been in the middle of a slippery road and stressing motorists. In addition, visibility was poor and his patrol car was too close to the towing. It's all his fault.

«@minoltista Cop is doing what he needs to do. Drivers have to be cautious with flashing lights of any kind (police, tow truck, etc). We do no see what is behind the tow truck. Pile up? Driver should be paying attention. They didn't approach slowly.
Winter tires grip and hold snow for snow on snow traction. Winter tires improve steering and braking. I live in winter area. I am quite familiar with and confident with driving in bad weather.

«@minoltista When it's slick, you can brake or you can steer. You can't do both or you get this kind of result.

We are still waiting for our first snow here on the Front Range in Colorado. It is an annual shit show of poor driving and bad tires, with areas of gridlock because crashes breed crashes.

«@JeffHirtle - What I said are the basic principles, which we are supposed to know. For braking, yes, you can brake with ABS. But when it comes to the steering wheel, you have to keep the line straight. If, on the other hand, you want to avoid an obstacle in front of you, such as a stupid cop, you suddenly turn the steering wheel and subsequently end up in the ditch.»

«It was the stupid cop, who caused this accident. He had no business being in the middle of an extremely slippery road.
Subsequently, it is the victim of his lack of judgment, who is accused of negligence. Things are bad everywhere, where idiots are in power. Ontario!

«@hackintosh-fookzion That's why you slow down with a stopped emergency vehicle ahead.»
