A video footage has emerged of the moment when Rakesh Ehagaban-Patel, a 51-year-old Gujarati-origin motel manager, was fatally shot at point-blank range in Pittsburgh, US. Patel came to the spot after hearing gunshots and asked the shooter, Stanley Eugene West, if he was alright. West, who had shot a woman just moments ago, fired at Patel, killing him.
Based on the criminal complaint and surveillance footage, 51-year-old Patel stepped outside the motel on October 3, after noticing a disturbance involving a couple in the parking lot. He reportedly heard gunshots and commotion.
The video captures the armed man walking towards Patel, who asks, "Are you alright, bud?" Seconds later, West is seen fatally shooting him at close range.
The shooting took place only weeks after Chandramouli Nagamallaiah, a 50-year-old Indian man, was tragically beheaded at a Dallas motel in front of his wife and son following a disagreement over a broken washing machine.
In all, seven Gujarat-origin people have been killed in motel crimes across the US this year. Gujaratis own 60% of the motel business in the US
Police reported that the suspect had been residing at the Pittsburgh Motel for approximately two weeks along with a woman and a child.
ATTACKER ALSO SHOT A POLICE OFFICER
He also maintains an address on Page Street in Pittsburgh’s North Side. The shooting happened shortly after he allegedly shot a woman, believed to be his companion.
According to investigators, the woman was sitting in her black sedan with a child inside when the attacker approached and opened fire, hitting her in the neck.
The woman managed to drive to the Dick Kernick Tire & Auto Service Center, about 1 pm (local time), where police found her. She was admitted to a hospital in critical condition. The child, who had been in the back seat, was not injured, according to the officials.
The attacker is now facing charges related to criminal homicide, attempted homicide, and recklessly endangering another person, police said.
After killing the motel owner, West "nonchalantly walked to a U-Haul van parked nearby and drove away," according to the complaint.
After the motel shooting, authorities pursued the suspect to Pittsburgh’s East Hills neighborhood, where he reportedly engaged in a gunfight with police. During the exchange, a Pittsburgh detective was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
