The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said there are investigating Friday’s deadly deputy-involved shooting.
The North Charleston Police Department responded to a call at the 400 block of Waverly Park Lane to assist the deputies with a critical situation involving a barricaded suspect. SWAT also responded to the scene.
North Charleston Police spokesman Harve Jacobs said the situation escalated when the suspect exited the home through a window and approached with a hatchet in each hand.
The suspect then used the hatchet and assaulted one of the deputies, which led to a barricaded suspect incident.
Officers made clear and repeated commands to the suspect, but the suspect did not comply which led to officers firing their weapons and striking the suspect.
Officers immediately provided medical assistance and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Sam Richardson thanked law enforcement for their assistance and response to the incident.
