«After shopping, the mother had no money left and had no other choice but to stand in the middle of the road with her family and chill»
Houston Cop Accidentally Uses his Car as a Bowling Ball, Hits 3 Girls Moronically Standing in the Road.
A mom was struck and killed by an HPD officer in front of two of her children.
The crash happened on Sept. 19 just before 10 p.m. along Antoine Drive near the Pinemont Drive intersection.
According to police, two officers were northbound on Antoine taking an arrested suspect to the processing center when their SUV struck Desire Pool, 41. She was crossing the street with her son and daughter.
Witnesses told investigators that Pool had just exited a bus and was not in a crosswalk as she crossed the street. She appeared to drop something, and they said she was hit when she bent down to grab it.
"I don't know what she (Officer Shelby Kennedy) was doing. She could've been looking at the little computer that she has right there, or whatever she had, or whatever she had so that her vision was obstructed to where she had to look somewhere else," Pool's 18-year-old son Jalen Gary told us Wednesday. "Don't know why or how that happened."
Police said one officer performed CPR on Pool, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Her children weren't hurt.
Now, they're facing a Thanksgiving without their mom.
"It's just that one person in our life. We need that person that brings the life to our Thanksgiving," Gary said. "She did stuff for us all our life. She got us anything we wanted even though it was the last dollar in her pocket."
Gary said having the videos released online is adding to their pain. He said they've been trying to keep his 11-year-old sister from seeing the moments she undoubtedly re-lives every day.
"What if my sister comes scrolling down? We tried to avoid her from seeing that video, like if you watch it, she's the one screaming trying to hold my mom, help my mom," Gary said.
In the dashcam video, multiple people were seen in the street just before the impact. Some jumped out of the way before Pool was hit.
A passenger in the patrol car shouts expletives in shock. The passenger asks, "You didn't see them?"
"No," said the driver of the patrol car, who was identified in the body-worn camera video as Kennedy. She calls for help as another officer rushes to help Pool.
"CPR in progress," shouts Officer Joshua Rosales.
"CPR in progress!" he shouts again. "Say it!"
"CPR in progress," Officer Kennedy says into the radio.
In another video, someone at the scene can be heard saying, "My mom! Y'all killed my mom!"
A child kneels next to Pool and takes her hand, saying "Mama, do not die on me."
"Come on, pray, pray," the child said.
Officer Rosales continues to perform CPR and asks Pool to breathe.
Houston police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing but they don't believe speed was a factor. HPD confirmed that the officers were back on duty, but the investigation was still pending.
Gary believes Kennedy should be fired.
«She pulled her kid to safety and took the blunt of it. Rest In Peace Ms. Desire Pool.»
«This bitch definitely wasn't watching the road and definitely was driving fast for that area she was going through. The fucking dude in the back saw them before she did»
«Hey girls, let us stay on the street in the middle of the night as an experience of what could be happen.... women, you know? women...»
«I'm an insurance agent and recently spoke to someone who killed a drunk man. Walking down a dark wooded road in a snow storm with now reflective clothes . Family still got a payout (25 k) for the loss of their unemployed family member and the guy has on his record for 5 to 8 years that he killed someone in a car wreck/pedestrian collision.
Officer for sure shouldn't have any immunity here. But an arrest may not be warranted.»
«a normal person would hit them anyways, it's just happened to be the cop. Standing in middle of the road at night, what do you expect?»
«Human speed bumps, that is a wonderful idea... By the way, they were standing in the road, not crossing the road.»
«Obviously a tragedy, but damn, I've seen squirrels display more common sense. Standing in a road with a speed limit well above 25 mph at night. On the other side, that cop should've seen them, her partner did.»
«Why were they just standing in the middle of the darkened road?
They didn't appear to be mobile and walking across. Were drugs
or alcohol involved?»
«As much as it sounds mean, they appeared to be hanging out in the road and not actually crossing....appears being the key word. If they were crossing and pedestrians having the right of way, the cop is in the wrong, legally. Saying that, it doesn't matter if you're right or wrong if you're dead.»
«You can't expect to hang out in the road at night with no reflective stuff on, not watching for cars, and expect people not to run you over »
«ONCE AGAIN, the social experiment of using women as police officers FAILED.
STOP D.E.I.»
