In this clip from Belgium shared on social media website Reddit, a Mercedes-Benz GLC driver shows that no matter how many options you have to avoid disaster, some people just can't be helped.

The accident, reported by local Belgian news outlet VRT, occurred in Bilzen, about 80km east of Brussels.

As shown in the video, the level crossing was closed to vehicle traffic due to roadworks, but the driver of the Mercedes-Benz drove around the bollards on one side, and stopped on the tracks at the crossing to move the other bollards.

She is approached by a worker who says that driving through the roadwork zone could earn her a €500 ($AU820) fine.

Strangely, the driver moved only the bollard to the left – but not in front – of her car. The worker filming the exchange helps her by moving the other barrier but the woman struggles with her car and doesn't engage gear.

As the crossing bells ring, the man warns her the train is approaching and hurriedly steps away as a commuter train plows into the the rear of the Mercedes still on the tracks.

The car spins into a pole and is heavily damaged, but in testament to the strength of the SUV, the woman is hurt but alive and is heard to exclaim that her car 'wouldn't work'.

During the video, you can see the driver reverse and then open her door to talk to the train-track worker.

«Dementia moment. Someone obviously shouldn't be driving anymore.»

«god forbid that suv hits that piece of plastic barrier.
i have personally seen cars on the motorway hit 44 tomes of truck rather than hit the 1 kg plastic cone

«I think I know what happened as my parent's car does this exact same crap and it's maddening (though it's a Jeep and not a Mercedes):

She pulls up in the wrong spot and is realizing it as the camera approaches. You see her go into reverse and move slightly backwards as the camera approaches. Presumably, she's only backing up a little so she can go forward to the left and clear the barrier (he hasn't moved it yet). Indeed, as camera is approaching, you see her cranking the wheel to the left. But camera guy is jabbering at her, interrupting her train of thought, and she can't hear him with the window up. So she makes the mistake of opening the door while the car is still in gear while her foot is on the brake. This condition of car in gear with the door open sets off the BS "safety system" in the vehicle and it forces itself out of gear and into "Park". On the Jeep (and probably this Mercedes), you have to go through a series of actions to clear the fault. Just closing the door and resetting the gear won't fix it and it will force itself back into Park every time you try to accelerate. Took me a couple minutes to clear the fault the first time as the instructions being displayed on the dash didn't make sense. She didn't have a couple minutes to mess with it. Got screwed over by a BS "safety feature" she didn't need and probably didn't even know about.
