A Leominster man has been arrested and charged with one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon, after allegedly attempting to open an emergency exit on a United Airlines flight to Boston and attacking a flight attendant. Francisco Severo Torres, 33, was apprehended at Logan International Airport on Sunday evening following the incident.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts, crew on the flight from Los Angeles to Boston were alerted approximately 45 minutes before landing that a side door between the plane's first class and coach sections had been tampered with. The locking handle had been moved about a quarter of the way towards the unlocked position, raising concern among the flight crew.
It was during this time that Torres allegedly made his move, attempting to open an emergency exit and then assaulting a flight attendant with a knife. The severity of the attack was such that the man was charged with using a dangerous weapon, highlighting the seriousness of the incident.
