The mystery deepens ... ─────────── Wantagh, Nassau County A group of five men was spotted opening a manhole cover just after 1 a.m. Thursday and descending into the sewer system. The Nassau County Police report that two witnesses saw the group enter the sewer system through a manhole at the intersection of Wantagh Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue. They replaced the cover once inside. There is no word on a potential motive. Multiple units responded to the scene including police and the Wantagh Fire Department. Police did a thorough investigation in the sewer system and did not find anything or anyone still inside. Similar incidents have happened recently in New York City, including three people who were caught on camera climbing out of a manhole near Penn Station wearing overalls and headlamps.
