A truck driver who was unable to avoid crashing into an 87-year-old-motorist says he is sharing dash cam footage of the emotionally devastating crash to help the public and family members understand what happened. The 44-year-old truck driver from West Virginia says that he had just picked up a load when the crash happened. The driver was traveling along Holly Pike in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania when 87-year-old Shirlene Kutz turned onto the road and directly in front of his semi truck, so close that he says there was nothing he could do to avoid her. “If there was something I could do, I would have done it,” the driver said to PennLive. “Every time I look up, I see the damn crash.” The speed limit on the road is 45. The dash cam footage shows the driver going 48 in the moments before the impact. The trucker suffered a sprained wrist, a fractured knee, injuries to his back and spine, and injuries to his fingers. Kutz died of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver has not been charged in the crash, but says he felt compelled to share the dash cam footage to help the public and family of the victim to better understand what happened. Police say Kutz’s view may have been obscured by a line of trees. The driver says he’s been trucking for about twenty years, but that this event has deeply affected him and made him scared to drive again.
