An Indian woman from Gujarat was shot dead during a suspected robbery attempt at a supermarket in the United States, her family has confirmed. The victim has been identified as 45-year-old Meghnaben Patel, who had been working at the supermarket in Virginia for the last 10 years. Meghnaben hailed from Jantral village in Visnagar taluka of Mehsana district in Gujarat. Her parents, Karsanbhai Patel and Kapilaben, live in Jantral. After receiving information about the incident, local police immediately reached the spot, cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. Special teams have also been deployed to arrest the attacker. CCTV footage from the store shows a man wearing animal-print pants and a grey jacket entering the nearly empty supermarket with his face covered. He then walks towards the counter and is seen speaking to the woman. A few moments later, the unidentified man pulls out a gun from his pocket and shoots her. The disturbing video shows the woman collapsing after being shot. The attacker then climbs over the counter and continues firing at her. The Illinois State Police (ISP) is releasing video after the Bradley Police Department requested ISP to conduct an independent investigation of an officer involved shooting. On April 8, 2026, at approximately 12:46 p.m., Bradley Police Department officers conducted a well-being check in the 600 block of Jonette Avenue in Bradley, IL for a man making suicidal statements. ​ On arrival, officers encountered 34-year-old Jose Orozco of Bradley armed with a box cutter. ​ Officers attempted to talk with Orozco when he started advancing on them. ​ Orozco disobeyed officers’ orders to stop and the officers discharged their weapons, striking Orozco. ​ Officers rendered medical aid until EMS arrived on scene. ​ Orozco was transported to an area hospital and pronounced deceased. ​ In accordance with ISP’s commitment to integrity and public transparency, the video of the event is being made available to the public. ​ This video is being released after consultation with the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office. ​ ISP provided Orozco’s family the opportunity to review the video before its release to the public. After a thorough investigation, ISP will turn the case over to the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
