A person died in a Wednesday afternoon crash on the Indianapolis south side, police say. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of West Sumner Avenue and Harding Street. That’s in an area with industries and homes about a mile north of the I-465 interchange. Witness said the crash appears to have involved a motorcycle and a Cadillac Escalade SUV. The roads were closed in the area of the crash. Azusa, CA - A man armed with a knife was shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies Wednesday afternoon after authorities say he charged toward a deputy during a confrontation in the Azusa area. The deputy-involved shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of North Orangecrest Avenue in an unincorporated area near Azusa, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said deputies from the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of an attempted suicide call where a man was harming himself with a knife. When deputies arrived, the man allegedly exited a side gate of the residence while armed and refused repeated commands to surrender the weapon, investigators said. The man then allegedly charged toward the nearest deputy, who was standing near a patrol vehicle, prompting the deputy to open fire. Deputies and firefighters rendered aid at the scene before the man was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, authorities said. Investigators recovered a knife with an approximately 3-inch blade at the scene. A massive search is underway for a driver who fled the scene after striking and killing two women in a Newark crosswalk over the weekend. The crash occurred on Saturday, at approximately 11:00 p.m. when Newark Police responded to the intersection of Park Avenue and North 7th Street after receiving emergency reports that two pedestrians had been struck. A preliminary investigation revealed that the two women were walking inside the crosswalk when a vehicle slammed into them. Rather than stopping to render aid, the driver accelerated, continuing northbound on North 7th Street and fleeing the scene. Both pedestrians sustained severe injuries and were rushed by emergency personnel to University hospital. Despite medical efforts, both women succumbed to their injuries and were later pronounced deceased. Officials have identified the victims as 58-year-old Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran of Elizabeth, and 61-year-old Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala of Newark. HICKORY, N.C. — A 19-year-old died Saturday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on US Highway 70 SE in Hickory on Friday evening. The motorcyclist, identified as Alex Austin, was riding eastbound on US Highway 70 SE near 21st Street Lane SE around 8:12 p.m. when he struck the rear of a 2021 Hyundai Kona that was traveling in the same direction, according to the Hickory Police Department. Austin was initially transported to Catawba Valley Media Center, then airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he died Saturday from his injuries. No charges have been filed as of Monday, June 15, police said.
