The Oakwood Police Department and the Texas Rangers are investigating a shooting in a convenience store parking lot that left one man hospitalized and prompted a school lockdown late last week. Oakwood Police Chief Anthony “Tony” Gasaway told KBTX that officers responded just after 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, to reports of a fight at a gas station on Broad Street. While officers were en route, a shooting occurred during the altercation. The victim was rushed to an area hospital, where police said his condition was listed as stable at last check. The suspect, identified by police as Kadonte Watkins, 24, of Palestine, TX, was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation before being booked into the Leon County Jail on charges of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and Taking a Weapon from an Officer. Bond was set at $75,000 for one charge, and no bond was set on the other two, so Watkins remains in custody. HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas ) - A newly released video shows the moment a suspect kicked the window out of a Houston County Sheriff’s Office patrol truck and slipped out of the moving vehicle during an attempted escape. According to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, on Sept. 3, Keon Dewayne Leonard was arrested on a warrant for assault of a public servant or judge. The sheriff’s office said there was a “scuffle” to get Leonard handcuffed and two sets of cuffs had to be used because he was 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 260 pounds. Once Leonard was in the patrol truck, the sheriff’s office said he slipped the cuffs from behind his back to the front and attempted to escape by kicking the window out of the patrol truck. The video and released photos show Leonard shatter the window and dent the truck’s door after repeated attempts, while the video shows him slipping out of the shattered window while the truck was moving. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy chased Leonard and used her Taser to “bring him back under control.” Leonard was then put into another vehicle and taken to the Houston County Jail. Leonard has been charged with evading arrest, attempting to escape while arrested, and destruction of property in addition to his initial charge. SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department released body-worn camera footage of officers who shot and killed a man on the West Side last month. The following five San Antonio police officers were involved in the shooting that killed Raul Garza, 69, on Aug. 1. The shooting happened just after 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 in the 600 block of Aurora Avenue after officers responded to a disturbance involving a gun. In the video, a caller tells SAPD’s dispatch that her neighbor was in the front yard waving a weapon. Garza placed both arms behind his back, then extended one arm outward while keeping the other behind his back, the video shows. At that point, four officers fired their weapons several times, striking Garza, police said. Garza was pronounced dead at the scene. Balcones Heights Mayor Johnny Rodriguez got into a heated argument over the budget and even called for a member to be removed. 78-year-old Lamar Gillian, a former city council member, told Rodriguez, "Don't you touch me," as Rodriguez made contact with his shoulder on his way out of the door. Investigators say Gillian was not blocking Rodriguez’s path out of the door, and it appeared he was making another movement towards Gillian before a bailiff stepped between them. ROYSE CITY, Texas — A police officer has been fired after viral video showed a violent confrontation with a Black family at a community pool. The Royse City Police Department announced Monday that the officer, who has not been publicly named, was terminated following an Internal Affairs investigation. The officer had been placed on administrative leave after the Aug. 3 incident at the Creekside community pool. Body camera and dash camera footage captured the chaotic scene. In the video, one officer is seen pulling a woman by the hair. Other officers push a woman who was holding a child. Another officer punches a young woman in the face multiple times. Internal Affairs determined the fired officer “did violate department standards, policies and procedures.” The department said the actions of three other officers involved in the video were found to be justified. An 18-year-old who was arrested at the scene will not face charges. The case of a second woman, 35, who was taken into custody for interfering is being referred to the Collin County District Attorney’s Office. Police are also investigating an unidentified third person who allegedly struck an officer in the face. The Next Generation Action Network, which has been advocating for the family, released a statement saying the termination confirms serious misconduct occurred. However, the group said firing one officer cannot be the final step and expressed concern that the department is still pursuing charges against the 35-year-old woman. NGAN is also calling for the full public release of all body-camera and dash-camera footage. Family members have spoken publicly about the incident. One of them, Amaiyah Allen-Smith, said they were at the pool listening to music when an older couple contacted a pool attendant and then called police. The department’s internal investigation is now closed, but the criminal investigation remains open. In a statement, Royse City Police said it will not condone misconduct by any member of the department and will take appropriate action when it occurs. A Texas police officer found himself in an unexpected showdown outside the station — with an opponent who had wings, no respect for the badge and apparently unlimited rematches. At first, the officer tries to keep an eye on his airborne adversary. Then things escalate. As the bird circles back for another run, the officer raises his hands, ducks and starts throwing punches into the air, appearing ready to go a few rounds with the persistent dive-bomber. The bird, apparently unimpressed by the warning shots from his fists, keeps coming back. At one point, the officer stares the bird down between attacks, only to have it swoop toward him again and send him right back into defensive mode.
