Texas officer shoots suspect who produced gun during pursuit

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department released body camera video Friday of a May 29 pursuit that ended with an officer shooting a suspect who police said produced a firearm. The 41-second video showed footage from SAPD officer Matthew Kory, 24, during the pursuit in the 3100 block of Vera Cruz. According to police, an anonymous 911 caller reported a wanted person, who was later identified as Hector Carreno, in a backyard near Southwest 19th Street and Chihuahua Street. Officers said Carreno, 31, had two separate felony warrants: possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm. The video showed Kory jumping over backyard fences when he spots Carreno. “Come here,” Kory shouted at Carreno as he chased him over another fence. Carreno’s shirt then gets caught in a chain-link fence. Kory grabbed onto Carreno’s shirt. “Come here, m-----f-----,” Kory told Carreno as he struggled to get away. “What did I do to you?” Carreno asked Kory. “Stay right f------ here,” Kory replied. According to the video, Carreno appeared to produce a gun in his right hand. Police said his weapon was later recovered at the scene. “He’s got a gun,” Kory yelled, according to the footage. Kory shot at Carreno four times, the video showed. Police previously said at least three shots were fired, with two of those shots wounding Carreno. In the video, Carreno was heard screaming in pain. “Let me see your hands,” Kory repeatedly shouted. The body-worn camera video concluded. Police said no officers or bystanders were injured during the pursuit. Harris County Precinct 5 Constables are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman accused of burglarizing a mausoleum at a west Houston cemetery. According to Precinct 5 Constable Terry Allbritton, surveillance video captured a woman opening glass cases containing cremated remains at a cemetery along the Katy Freeway near North Eldridge Parkway. Investigators say the woman stole jewelry and other valuables from inside the mausoleum. The surveillance footage also shows the woman accompanied by a toddler during the incident, authorities said. Deputies believe the suspect may be connected to at least one other theft reported earlier this year at the same cemetery. The woman is described as being between 30 and 45 years old and having tattoos on her back. Officials released surveillance video of the suspect and are asking anyone who recognizes her or has information about the case to contact Precinct 5 investigators. The investigation remains ongoing.

Austin police released body camera footage and identified a 32-year-old man who was tased and died during an arrest in North Austin on Saturday, and the seven officers who were placed on administrative leave. The man, identified as Josh Ryan Trumble, died June 6 after officers deployed a Taser while attempting to handcuff him outside a residence in the 7600 block of Grover Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:18 p.m., approximately 42 minutes after officers first made contact with him.

Texas — The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office on Tuesday released video from a March altercation on Yaupon Ranch Drive. Investigators said the confrontation started between two groups of middle school students after a girl was teased about her shoes. Because the individuals involved are juveniles, authorities blurred their faces in the video. According to the constable's office, the dispute quickly escalated, and at least one adult became involved. Investigators allege a woman seen in the video was armed and pointed a gun at several juveniles during the incident. Authorities said the woman is expected to face a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon once she is identified. The fight is part of what deputies describe as an ongoing pattern of disturbances in the neighborhood, where residents say violence and confrontations involving young people have become increasingly common. One longtime resident, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons, said she has watched conditions in the neighborhood deteriorate over the past several years. “Since a little bit before the pandemic, like 2018, 2019, it just got bad,” she said. The woman, who has lived in the neighborhood with her grandmother for more than 20 years, said concerns about safety have altered her daily routine. “I don't walk to check my mail anymore,” she said. “I used to walk six miles a day. I stopped doing that.” She said groups of young people who do not live in the area frequently gather in the neighborhood, leading to conflicts and disturbances. “There's so many children that come around here that don't live here,” she said. “They bring drama, fights, guns.” The resident said she and several family members were injured during a shooting in the neighborhood last fall. Her 73-year-old grandmother was critically wounded when a bullet struck her in the thigh while she was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher. “Next thing I know the shots started firing and I was shot, and a couple of my family members were shot,” she said. Despite an increased law enforcement presence, residents say problems persist. “Every day there's at least seven or eight cop cars up and down the streets because some teenagers are doing something they're not supposed to,” the resident said.
