What began as a farmers’ and shepherds’ protest outside the Romanian Government turned into violent clashes with police. Thousands came to Piața Victoriei demanding action over restrictions on sheep and goat exports, low agricultural prices — including milk — soaring costs such as diesel, and cuts or reductions in agricultural support. Many say they are on the brink of bankruptcy, while younger generations no longer see farming or shepherding as a viable future. Protesters say they will not leave until concrete solutions are offered. They are demanding direct talks with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and action from Agriculture Minister Tánczos Barna, whose government has been negotiating with Brussels over reopening exports. The protest also took on a political dimension. Some participants openly supported Călin Georgescu (the far-right, pro-Russian presidential candidate who unexpectedly won the first round of Romania's 2024 presidential election; Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the election days before the scheduled runoff, citing electoral irregularities and alleged foreign interference). However, there is no established evidence that Georgescu supporters as a group initiated the violence. Farmers' representatives have distanced themselves from those who escalated the confrontation. A reported free-speech rally in Los Angeles turned chaotic on August 23 after counter-protesters confronted activist Eoin Richard, who was hosting an anti-Islam demonstration. Connolly, publicly known as Eoin Richard, organized a “Take Back LA” free-speech rally criticizing Islam. He originally advertised the event outside the Islamic Center of Southern California on Vermont Avenue. Opponents circulated a pre-event advisory describing the gathering as a “far-right” rally and accusing organizers of targeting the Muslim community. As counter-protesters gathered outside the Islamic center, Richard reportedly redirected supporters to the nearby Precious Blood Catholic Church in Koreatown. The move did not end the confrontation. The opposing crowd followed him. Left-wing extremists and Antifa activists entered the church, disrupted the gathering, and chased Richard from the property. Video from the confrontation shows counter-protesters surrounding Richard and repeatedly calling him a “Nazi.” The footage presents a tense scene as the crowd closes in and Richard attempts to get away. Richard eventually sought refuge inside a nearby Starbucks. The group followed him into the business and surrounded the table where he and another man were seated. The social media platform BlueSky is being used as a rapid response network to target ICE officers attempting to make arrests “When the uprisings against ICE erupted on the West Coast in June, we saw uniform signage, tactical gear, and boots-on-the-ground activists deployed to Los Angeles, the epicenter of the unrest, almost instantaneously. These certainly were not spontaneous riots. They were well-coordinated, and in fact, well-funded. What we uncovered was an orchestrated operation, and those at the forefront of the anti-ICE resistance have received ample funding. Chief among them is the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, or CHIRLA for short. CHIRLA, a 501c3 nonprofit, is part of a sprawling anti-ICE activist network in the Los Angeles area, serving as rapid response to deportation sightings. CHIRLA instructs its followers via BlueSky to report ICE encounters to the Los Angeles Rapid Response Network, abbreviated LARRN. CHIRLA co-founded LARRN in late January with the expressed intent to counter the incoming Trump administration's immigration policies” “Here's how it works: In response to reports of immigration enforcement called in over its hotline, LARRN sends out cells comprised of immigration lawyers, legal observers, and activist organizers in order to mobilize counter-efforts against ICE.
