A Democratic congressional candidate running against incumbent U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda was taken into custody Saturday after a violent altercation at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei. Kirill Basin, 40, was arrested for two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, and his bail was set at $1 million, county officials said. According to Maui Police Department, the incident began when a 61-year-old man asked Basin to lower the volume of his music. Basin allegedly threatened the man by implying he had a firearm and would shoot the victim’s wife. A bystander intervened, leading to a physical altercation during which Basin allegedly armed himself with a knife and threatened multiple people before throwing it into the ocean. Police said the bystander recovered the knife and turned it over to responding officers. Police say Basin has been arrested for other incidents of assault and property damage since May. Several people have taken out temporary restraining orders against him, including Maui County Council member Thomas Cook, who said he was worried about his personal safety and for his staff after Basin disrupted a meeting in May. Cook said Basin “became aggressive and confrontational” and “threatened violence against the police” and a council ambassador. Two days later, on May 29, reports circulated that Basin “brandished a weapon in a county office building in a confrontation with county employees.” Attorneys Myles Breiner and Brandon Segal represent Basin. Breiner said the case is pending review by the Maui Prosecutor’s Office and had no comment at this time. In a statement, Tokuda said, “Violence has no place in our communities or in public service. Anyone holding or seeking office, at any level of government, should be held to a higher standard. From Politico: Sylvia Luke, the Democratic lieutenant governor of Hawaii, was indicted Friday on bribery charges, the state’s Department of the Attorney General announced in a press conference. “From the outset of this investigation, I have repeated that we have a commitment to following the facts to where they lead, no matter how long it takes to get there,” Anne Lopez, the state’s attorney general, told reporters. A grand jury on Friday returned a 12-count indictment charging Luke with criminal conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery and falsifying campaign committee reports. The charges stem from a monthslong investigation by the Hawaii attorney general’s office into allegations the lieutenant governor accepted campaign contributions from businessperson and lobbyist Tobi Solidum in exchange for helping advance a Covid-19 testing contract while she served as chair of the state House Finance Committee in 2022. Luke’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and she does not appear to have entered a plea as of Saturday evening. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green told POLITICO on Saturday he believes Luke should resign. “The Attorney General announced significant developments in her department’s corruption investigation and has provided an update on their findings,” he said in a statement. “The Lieutenant Governor needs to consider formally resigning to address this matter and so that the state of Hawaiʻi can move forward.” Luke was one of five people indicted in the case Friday, including former state Rep. Ryan Yamane, who like Luke is a Democrat. The lieutenant governor, who was elected to serve as Green’s deputy in 2022, took a leave of absence from the post in April when the campaign finance investigation first made headlines.
