A 29-year-old man died Sunday after he was stabbed near the Kroger by Ponce City Market on the Atlanta Beltline, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries, police said. His identity has not been released. Police detained 54-year-old Jonathan Hamby in connection with the stabbing. Investigators do not believe Hamby and the victim knew each other. Hamby has been arrested more than 30 times, including in cases involving possession of a knife and aggravated assault, according to records. Police said he is on active probation following an aggravated assault case in Brookhaven. Court records from DeKalb County show Hamby pleaded guilty in 2024 to carrying a weapon within a school safety zone. He was initially sentenced to 10 years, with two years to be served in custody and the remaining eight years on probation, records show. Records show Hamby did not complete required anger management and a mental health evaluation in 2025. A Georgia police officer is recovering at home after he was injured when a fleeing shoplifting suspect dragged him over 100 yards during a traffic stop. The incident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. when Covington police pulled over a 19-year-old woman, later identfied as Destinee Riggins, accused of shoplifting at a Walmart. While he was talking to Riggins, who was in her car, she sped off with the officer clinging to the window. The officer was dragged over 100 yards before he let go of the vehicle, and Riggins kept driving. He was still holding her driver's license when bystanders came over to help him. "When he hit the ground, obviously he was out of breath, there was a lot of pain," Det. Daniel Seals said. Riggins was arrested at home a few hours following the dragging incident. Investigators discovered that she had had a stolen handgun in a bag during the stop. Riggins was charged with aggravated assaulton a police officer and armed robbery. She could still face additional charges. CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. - Three men arrested in connection with a beating outside a Pooler gas station may have their charges dismissed after Chatham County District Attorney Shalena Jones privately warned Sheriff Richard Coleman that his investigators are making high-profile arrests without sufficient evidence to support prosecution. The arrests of Motreon Williams, Ronnie Scott, and Jimmie Alexander came in February, after a viral video showing the alleged beating caught Coleman’s attention. Coleman documented much of the investigation on social media. The Sheriff’s Office arrested both Williams and Alexander, charging them with party to a crime. Scott was charged with aggravated assault. Once arrests were made, investigators handed the case to the District Attorney’s Office. Internal emails obtained by WTOC Investigates show prosecutors were alarmed by what was missing from the case file. Assistant District Attorney Sara Moorhead contacted lead investigator Trey Conners and outlined ten pieces of missing evidence, including warrants with the actual date of the incident, hospital records, witness identification of the defendants, and — most critically — an interview with the victim. “These should have been done before arrests were made,” Moorhead wrote to Conners. Conners replied that he was “also frustrated with the difficulty in getting lack of cooperation [sic]” and that he was scheduled to meet with the victim, who was in prison, the following week. He said that depending on the outcome of that meeting, dismissal of charges could be an option. Moorhead forwarded the email to District Attorney Jones. BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. — The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is asking the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into a video that shows a deputy punching a man. The video, which has circulated on social media, shows the deputy on top of the man and punching him. The video also shows the man grabbing at the deputy's vest and apparently trying to grab equipment. According to Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massey, it happened recently at the Texaco gas station on Vinson Highway. He says the deputy was dispatched for trespassing at the gas station and the suspect scuffled with the deputy. Massey has not released the name of the suspect or the deputy or released an incident report on the case. He says there's a full video of the incident, but he's also not released that. Massey did not name the deputy or the man involved, but he did say that the man being punched was arrested. The GBI was called in because of the very public nature of the video, which is in total about 13 minutes, according to Massey. Video circulating on social media is much shortly at roughly 13 seconds. SMYRNA, Ga. - Smyrna police are searching for a man who pistol-whipped a driver who is in his 50s after a road rage incident escalated into a violent attack in late June. A traffic dispute began in the middle of the day near Cumberland Blvd and Cobb Parkway when one car cut off another. Both drivers continued down the road, but a man in his 50s driving a black car noticed a silver vehicle following him into his apartment complex. When the man walked up to the silver car to talk to the passenger, a physical fight broke out. According to Smyrna Police Lt. Meredith Holt, the passenger punched the driver in the face multiple times, knocked him to the ground, and pistol-whipped him with a gun. The female driver of the silver car, identified as 18-year-old Hayle Kirkpatrick, got out during the attack but eventually drove away with the passenger. The victim staggered to his feet before collapsing again and was taken to a hospital for surgery. "The driver of vehicle one was beaten pretty badly, pistol whipped with a firearm and he sustained significant injuries that required him to have surgery," Holt said. Police issued an arrest warrant for Kirkpatrick after she refused to name her passenger. "We have charged her with obstruction because she's not cooperating with us in this case," Holt explained. Police are investigating after a customer was caught on camera attacking a manager at a Powder Springs Dairy Queen on Tuesday. The city’s police department says it has identified the driver. “Our officers and detectives wasted no time getting to work. A store clerk was caught on camera attempting to stop a robber from stealing from a northwest Atlanta gas station earlier this month. The video shows the clerk at the store located at 1400 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy. NW in a struggle with the man around 9:20 p.m. on July 12. According to the Atlanta Police Department, the man, who had been spotted taking items and putting them into a bag, was confronted by the store clerk. The video shows the two men in a physical struggle. The man was later seen walking westbound on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The identity of the man involved in the struggle remains unknown. Authorities have not said what specific items were placed in the bag. It is unknown if anyone sustained injuries during the physical struggle. An alleged gang member and two other people were taken into custody last week after an Atlanta police canvass, according to the department. On July 17, investigators were canvassing 369 McDaniel St. SW after a shooting when they found 35-year-old Rodney Grant, described as a “known gang member,” was at the apartment complex. Body camera video shows officers calling Grant out of the apartment using a loudspeaker. Grant had arrest warrants for aggravated assault and gang-related charges, according to police. During the canvass, two more suspects with outstanding warrants were also found: 21-year-old Leglance Mallory and 20-year-old Jarquez Kelley. Mallory faces four counts of aggravated assault, second-degree criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and gang-related charges, according to police. Meanwhile, Kelley faces charges of second-degree criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, two counts of entering an automobile and theft by taking. More than year after police vowed to hold a gunman accountable for shooting a Fulton County Sheriff’s deputy, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) has closed the case without charging anyone. While APD investigators said surveillance video of the shooting drove their decision to close the case, the department has repeatedly refused to allow the public to see it. But Atlanta News First Investigates has obtained that video for a source inside the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. It shows a different series of events from the accounts given to the public on April 24, 2025. Deputy Evens Lafond was shot in the leg after he chased down a unhoused man suspected of making threats downtown. Lafond was working a detail in plain clothes when he responded to the call in his assigned car, an undercover Honda with concealed police lights. Surveillance video shows the Honda — without lights or sirens activated — jumping a curb on Forsyth Street near Trinity Avenue. Lafond, wearing jeans and a t-shirt, jumped out and drew his gun, according to the video. The suspect had run out of frame. Also out of view was the suspect’s brother, Ivan Watson, who was a passenger in a car nearby. APD investigators determined Watson fired a total of 12 rounds in Lafond’s direction, with only one bullet hitting the deputy in the lower left leg. Lafond denied firing his weapon in a written statement obtained from the sheriff’s office by Atlanta News First Investigates. APD investigators determined otherwise. A dozen .40-caliber shell casings were found close to the spot where Watson told investigators he had fired his handgun (an earlier version of this article mentioned a Glock Model 26, which is what Watson told investigators he had. The Glock 26 is a 9mm handgun, not a .40 S&W. The firearm from the shooting was never recovered after Watson told police he had thrown it in the woods).
