Cambridge, MA - Body camera video shows a man getting out of his car and pointing a gun at police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in August before officers shot and killed him. Following an inquest, a judge ruled the officer's actions were justified. Half a dozen shots rang out in Cambridge on Friday, Aug. 21, leaving 64-year-old William Woodworth dead. The police shooting prompted an investigation by the state. Cambridge police were responding to a call for an idling car in a parking lot on Temple Street, when an interaction with one of the people involved turned deadly in less than 60 seconds. Two officers were speaking with a man and woman while Officer Donald Conrad approached the driver in the car, later identified as Woodworth. Conrad told state investigators in recorded interviews that this area is known for illegal drug activity. "I saw the smoke coming out of the car as soon as he rolled down the windows. I say something to the extent of you can't be smoking crack in here," Conrad said. "I asked Mr. Woodworth if he could step out of the car and he kind of blows me off a little bit and I reiterate to do me a favor and step out of the car." Body camera video released on Friday by the Middlesex district attorney showed Woodworth opening the car door while at the same time he reached under the driver's seat and pulled out a gun. On the driver's side of the car was Conrad's partner. "And then the person came out the car and there was a firearm in my face," Officer David Kerns recalled. "I just got my hands up as fast as I could. I believe I grabbed like his forearm wrist area and I just … it's weird because time felt like it stood still, but everything was happening so fast." That's when Conrad fired several shots at Woodworth, and a third officer, James Nestor, fired a round as well. "At that moment I was concerned that Officer Kerns was going to get shot point-blank. I guess I fell back on training. If there's a life in danger, there was a threat. We had to neutralize the threat in the moment," Nestor said. "I'm worried he's going to blow my partner's head off. I already told him 'don't do that' or 'drop it.' That was the only de-escalation that was feasible at the moment or else Officer Kerns might not be here right now," Conrad said. Cambridge police attempted medical aid to Woodworth, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner said he died from five gunshot wounds. The owner of a Southern California-based tech company faces federal charges after allegedly selling millions of dollars' worth of computer servers containing U.S.-manufactured graphics processing units to China, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Greg Lui, 38, who also goes by Yiu Kong Lui, was charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the Export Control Reform Act and the Export Administration Regulations, one count of outbound smuggling, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, the department announced in a media release. "Protecting America's national security means keeping our advanced Super Intelligence technology from being used to strengthen our adversaries' military capabilities," said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. "This defendant allegedly used false paperwork and shipments through third countries to smuggle more than $300 million in export-controlled computer servers to China. We will aggressively prosecute those who put our national security at risk for profit." Between 2023 and 2024, Lui and others used Earthmade to buy and send export-controlled items to China without the required licenses issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Instead, the items were sent to countries such as Malaysia and Singapore, where no such license is required, then illegally re-exported to China. He is expected to make his first court appearance Friday in Los Angeles. The owner of Pat's King of Steaks in South Philadelphia is calling for accountability after a customer threw a cheesesteak at the restaurant's longtime general manager in an incident captured on video. According to the restaurant, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday outside the iconic cheesesteak shop. Video recorded from multiple angles shows a customer throwing a cheesesteak at general manager Tom Francano before running away. Francano, who said he has worked at the restaurant for nearly 50 years, described the encounter. "My first reaction was, 'He hit me in the face.' He stood at the window and then he took off running down the street," Francano said. "He hit me right in the side of the face, went all over the place, glass, everything." Francano said the individual arrived with a camera and tripod, leading him to believe the person might be an influencer. After ordering a cheesesteak with whiz and onions, the customer returned a few minutes later and complained about the sandwich, Francano said. "He turns around, he says to me, 'It's garbage.' I said -- there was another couple eating outside -- I said, 'Guys, how was your steaks tonight?' They said, 'Our steaks were great, they were good,'" Francano said. Immediately after, Francano said the meat started flying, and the customer fled. Pat's owner, Frank Olivieri, said he believes the incident may have been motivated by a desire for online attention, though it remains unclear whether the individual is a well-known influencer or someone seeking views and clicks through online content. "Why would you throw a cheesesteak in someone's face? That's assault," Olivieri said. Olivieri said police were called after the incident and that he wants the person responsible to be held accountable. "I'm thinking about offering a $500, no, maybe a $5,000 cash reward, for the arrest and prosecution and imprisonment of this person for assault and battery on my manager," Olivieri said. -New York City police are questioning the 25-year-old man accused of stabbing a fellow train rider to death with a kitchen knife. Jyrell Thomas was taken to Jamaica Hospital for a psych evaluation on Thursday morning. He is described by police as emotionally disturbed. He was later arrested on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Police said Thomas was pacing back and forth inside the train car and appeared agitated before approaching Mesias Lojano, 59, just after 4 p.m. Lojano tried to walk away before Thomas swung at him with a kitchen knife, according to police. Bismarck Villareyna witnessed the attack and recorded video aboard the train. "I heard, oh somebody is being attacked, somebody being attacked. So I pulled out my phone, started walking, as you see in the video," Villareyna said. The violence eventually spilled onto a J train platform, where bystanders chased Thomas. Thomas has one prior arrest, stemming from a robbery early last month in which he stole $23 of merchandise from a Bronx Target. He was charged with petit larceny, obstruction of governmental administration and criminal possession of stolen property. This is the sixth homicide in the subway system this year. There were four murders in the system all of last year, and 10 in 2024. A Maine Wire reporter was involved in a potentially dangerous confrontation with a driver Thursday morning while reporting outside a Bangor methadone clinic. Reporter Joe Sokol was conducting reporting from public property near Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center, also known as Discovery House BR Inc., at 689 Odlin Road when a driver confronted him and attempted to interfere with his work. Maine Wire Editor-in-Chief Steve Robinson said the driver recognized Sokol as a reporter and confronted him in an apparent effort to interfere with his reporting. “The bedlamite identified Sokol as a journalist and expressed a clear intent to stop him from conducting routine journalism from public property,” Robinson said in a statement. Robinson alleged that the driver then attempted to strike Sokol with a vehicle, characterizing the incident as an attempted killing. Sokol was able to move out of the vehicle’s path and was not injured. Robinson said Sokol also recorded the vehicle’s license plate immediately after the encounter, allowing police to identify the driver. “Sokol’s quick-thinking and training immediately allowed him to preserve the license plate,” Robinson said. “He is unharmed and safe.” The Maine Wire identified the vehicle as a blue Jeep Compass bearing Maine registration 841-LZD. Robinson further alleged that the driver may have been intoxicated and said the news organization would cooperate with police as they investigate both the driver and the circumstances preceding the encounter. “We will cooperate fully as they investigate the driver of the Blue Jeep Compass Maine License Plate 841-LZD, as well as any nearby accessories to attempted murder who may have provided this individual with intoxicating substances before he immediately attempted vehicular homicide,” Robinson said. Bangor police responded to the incident and are investigating, according to The Maine Wire. “The Maine Wire would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women of the Bangor Police Department who handled the situation with seriousness, compassion, and aplomb,” Robinson said. Sokol had been reporting on Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center, an active medication-assisted-treatment facility that provides methadone treatment. The Maine Wire said the facility has received roughly $25 million in taxpayer funding. The incident comes amid a series of confrontations involving Maine Wire reporters this year. In January, reporter Jon Fetherston was physically confronted while covering a Lewiston City Council meeting, and in July he was shoved, spat on and struck in the head with a skateboard while livestreaming an anti-ICE protest in Biddeford; a man was later charged with assault in connection with that incident. The following day, a tire on Fetherston’s vehicle had been slashed after another anti-ICE demonstration in Scarborough, while The Maine Wire also reported that he had received multiple death threats and that protesters in Biddeford had chanted his home address.
