Manhattan: West 204th Street & Sherman Avenue, several people, including a pedestrian, were injured this morning in the Inwood section of Manhattan. Police said a Corvette was speeding eastbound on Sherman Avenue around 6:30 a.m. when it collided with a Mercedes-Benz near West 204th Street. The Corvette then struck a 34-year-old pedestrian before coming to a stop near a building. The Mercedes continued into a parked, unoccupied moped. The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene and remains wanted by police. The Corvette driver, a passenger, and the pedestrian were all taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition. Investigators are looking into whether the vehicles were drag racing before the crash. A former employee at the Trader Joe’s on California and Hyde stole a bottle of wine before the store opened Friday morning. Staff yelled at him to leave as he fled with it. Officers who were already in the parking lot investigating a vehicle fire gave chase. The suspect resisted, leading to a struggle on the ground in the street. A Lexus SUV then struck all three — the suspect and two officers. The shoplifter was killed. One officer was pinned under the car and both suffered leg injuries but are expected to recover. The driver stayed and is cooperating. Another wild theft on San Francisco streets ends in tragedy.
