Canadian man sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences in California after posing as an Amazon driver and attacking 2 people. Devin Wolfgang Vanderhoef, 26, flew from Canada to Monterey County after meeting a woman on an online gaming platform. The woman allegedly told Vanderhoef she was cutting off communication with him to focus on her boyfriend, and Vanderhoef planned the attack in which he planned to “actually kill someone.” Vanderhoef purchased knives, handcuffs, and duct tape, and then, after surveilling the woman, he approached the woman's house posing as an Amazon driver. The woman's boyfriend answered the door, and Vanderhoef forced his way inside, stabbing the boyfriend and then choking the woman until she couldn't breathe. The boyfriend was able to disarm Vanderhoef and stab him with scissors handed to him by his girlfriend. Vanderhoef was traveling with his friend, Darius Avery Whyte, who was arrested while on his return flight to Canada and pled guilty to assault charges. Canadian police chief forced to make a video statement after his officers started running the plates of attractive women coming out of coffee shops and gyms. Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs is calling on officers who use police databases to meet women to quit. Stubbs says these officers are turning police databases into "their own way to meet women." "We've seen members messaging vulnerable victims on calls that they've attended in an attempt to develop an intimate relationship," Stubbs said. A man suspected of stabbing two people in Surrey was shot dead by police on Friday (May 29) near Holland Park. Surrey Police Service officers were called to a tower in the 13300-block of Old Yale Road on Friday afternoon at about 1 p.m. for a reported assault. After arriving, police located one person suffering from stab wounds, according to a press release from the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO). SPS officers made their way to Holland Park, where a second person was also found suffering from stab wounds. Police also found the suspect, a man who was identified by witnesses as having been involved in the assaults. The man got into what SPS described as a “confrontation” with police. After what the IIO refers to as an “interaction” with officers, the man was shot by police. He was taken to hospital with injuries but later pronounced dead. Officers and paramedics provided aid to the stabbing victims, but one of the people suffering from stab wounds was pronounced dead. The other was taken to a hospital with injuries.
