A jury today convicted a man who shot a Mountain View police officer at point blank range after a traffic stop. Following a trial, Jeffrey Choy was found guilty of attempted murder of a police officer for the July 16, 2022, shooting. The officer, who was struck by a bullet fired from an arm’s length away, has since recovered from the injuries and is back on duty. Choy, 37, of Union City, faces life in prison. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled. District Attorney Jeff Rosen praised the jury for the conviction. He said: “This verdict reminds us that every time a law enforcement officer starts their shift, they are risking their lives to protect us and our families. I thank this officer and every officer who has made it their professional responsibility to put themselves between our community and extremely dangerous people.” The Mountain View officer was conducting a DUI enforcement shift downtown. Less than an hour after midnight, he stopped the driver of a Ford Explorer after seeing the vehicle run a stop sign near Villa and Hope streets and then drive through a four-way intersection. When the officer walked up to the driver’s side of the vehicle, the two exchanged greetings. Choy then raised a 9 mm handgun and fired twice. One bullet missed. The other bullet went through the officer’s arm and struck his bullet proof vest. After Choy drove away, he crashed his vehicle near Higdon Avenue and then fled on foot. After hiding in a laundry room for hours, he escaped the city. He was arrested the next day by authorities outside a Black Bear Diner in Fremont, where he was having brunch with his family. When he shot the officer, Choy was a felon who was prohibited from having any weapons. ELK GROVE, Calif. - A hot air balloon slammed into the side of a California casino after making an unplanned launch due to strong winds, police say. Video captured the moment Monday afternoon when a hot air balloon slammed into the Sky River Casino in Elk Grove during a celebration for the groundbreaking of a new hotel. The balloon hit the side of the building, at one point reaching a 90-degree angle, while the pilot was still in the basket. After the chaotic tumble, the balloon stayed in the air for about 20 minutes before landing in a field. The pilot was not injured, and there were no passengers on board. The Elk Grove Police Department said the balloon made an unplanned launch due to unexpected strong winds and that it also hit a power line. TEMECULA, Calif. -- Shocking video out of Riverside County shows the moment a hot air balloon landed in the backyard of a home. Now, the homeowners are speaking to ABC affiliate KABC about their stunning experience. It wasn't the landing anyone expected, but somehow, a hot air balloon carrying 13 people landed in the backyard of a Temecula home on Saturday. The homeowner was watching TV around 8:30 a.m. when a neighbor knocked on his door. "I go and answer the door. This guy's like, 'They just landed in your backyard!!!'" said Hunter Perrin. "And I'm like, 'What!?'" Perrin and his wife, Jenna, who was in another room at the time, then went outside to see what had happened. "I open the sliding glass door, and there's a basket full of thirteen people in my backyard!" Perrin said. "The pilot, he was masterful. He got it right down inside, like directly into the backyard, where there was nothing. The balloon didn't catch on anything. No one was injured." The homeowners say the hot air balloon pilot told them the wind died, forcing him to make an emergency landing. "You can kind of see in the video of how they came in. He kind of plopped straight down and was moving very slowly," Perrin said. "And I run to the backyard, and there's a whole group of people that are just waving at me," Jenna said. "And I'm like, 'Oh my God. So the sound I heard was the flames?!' And I'm like... hi!'" Incredibly, there was no damage in the backyard and no one was injured. KABC spoke to one of the passengers about the moments that led up to the emergency landing. "At first I was like, 'Oh my God! We're in a backyard! This is crazy!'" said hot air balloon passenger Brianna Avalos. Avalos and her husband were taking their first hot air balloon ride to celebrate their 10th anniversary. As they started approaching the neighborhood, Avalos says the pilot made an announcement. "He said there's not enough wind, because the wind kind of like, stopped a little bit. And he was like, 'We're going to land.' And we only had a little bit of fuel left," Avalos said. Neighbors gathered in the street to watch. "He was trying to get us to the street, but we couldn't get to the street in time, so we landed in the people's backyard safe and sound, like no one's hurt, everyone's great. He was an amazing pilot!"
