About three weeks ago, Maria heard a knock at the door just before 9 p.m. She opened it and was immediately struck in the head. "He's just hitting me over the head with a hammer, and all I'm feeling is the hits and then the waves of blood coming down my face and he didn't stop," Maria told WCCO. She knew the man. He had done yard work for her. He had walked her dog. That night, she says, he showed up wearing a wig. Maria was on the floor, bleeding, when he turned toward the staircase. Her young children were asleep upstairs. That is when Athena went lunged at the man. "She was biting him," Maria said. "And I could see the bl00d coming out of his legs from his jeans." He never made it up the stairs. According to charging documents, he fled the scene and showed up at a hospital... with dog bite wounds. Maria ended up with SIX STAPLES in her head, but thankfully her children slept through the whole thing. "This is the closest I've ever been to de*th," Maria said. "I'm grateful she was there... I don't think I'd be here without her. I think I'll be laying over there on the floor." The man is now charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, and there is an active warrant out for him. Maria is healing. Her kids are safe. A 63-year-old grandmother and a social worker who spent her ENTIRE LIFE HELPING people... ...has just been ST*BBED 12 TIMES by a total stranger and REPEAT OFFENDER who grabbed a knife off the store shelf and ATTACKED HER AT RANDOM She is FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE in the hospital in a coma. Her name is Phyllis Robinson. She's 63 years old. A social worker. A woman who spent her career caring for other people. On Monday afternoon, she was doing the most ordinary thing in the world. Shopping. In Inkster, Michigan. Around 3:15 in the afternoon. Police say a 22-year-old man named Stephen Ross walked up, grabbed a knife right off the store's own shelf, and st*bbed her over and over. Her side. Her stomach. Her back. Twelve times, her daughter says. Police say it was COMPLETELY random. Completely unprovoked. She did not know this man. He just… picked her. Phyllis was put into an induced coma. She's in the ICU fighting for her life. "I hold her hand. I cleaned her fingernails because she had residue from bl00d under her nails." Police say Ross lived in a group home half a mile away.
